Problem I am having is that I can't get online anymore. I am pretty this has been caused by a virus. I keep getting a pop-up saying that Norton has stopped a virus and that my computer is protected. I guess that protected means I can no longer go online. When I try using Explorer to access MSN a page comes up saying invalid address. Will one of the virus removal discs you can buy @ Wall-Mart work at restoring my computer so I can buy and install some protection? What would be a good one to purchase?

try a system restore? usually the virus programs telling you that you have a virus is really the virus itself. system restore usually works well. if you cant start up in safe mode shut your computer down turn it on and before it loads again shut it down until it prompts you asking to start in safe mode. then it will ask to do a system restore.

+1 for Malwarebytes. It doesn't really provide any protection, but does an excellent job of removing viruses/malware after its already installed. I use AVG for protection instead of paying $50+ for McAfee or Norton. Its free and I've never had any problems.

Sometimes I wish I still did in-home repair. Malware was about 60% of the calls I received. Was definitely an easy way to pull down that $100/hr billable rate. Got so much practice that I used to be able to manually remove a rogue in just over 4 minutes.

MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware are both great. Immunet and Avast are great for prevention of SOME stuff. There are a lot more things out there that AV products just don't touch. Just don't touch any of the big ones like Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, or anything you pay stupid amounts of money for.

If you're ok with buying something, I suggest the package from Emsisoft.

Oh, and as far as your original problem is concerned, whatever you have probably set your browser to use a proxy server. Even after you get it cleaned, sometimes you have to go deselect that manually.
