I live within the city limits of new castle. Lately I've had a raccoon hanging around on our porch eating our cat food (I wish it would just eat the cat... :D)

Am I legally allowed to shoot it? Do I have to use a rifle or can I use a pistol?

    Either way it'd be a 22lr

Animal control should let you borrow a live trap, bait it with the cat food, then call animal control to pick up the full trap. (You probably have several)

Animal control will not pick up the animal because it is not a domestic animal. You have to haul it off yourself. Be sure you take it at least 20 miles or it will come back. If you need to borrow a trap pm me.

Some of the new break-barrel pellet guns hit about like a .22.
I have one that sends a pellet out at 1100 fps and hits hard enough to bend a coin at 25ft.

It may not kill it, but it'd sure make it not want to stick around for more.

I was once told by animal control that if you live trap a wild animal, it "..must be released in the same county that it was trapped."

trap it and let it go on 3 :D or trap it and take it into the country and then shoot it:D either way you don't leave the county and said coon will most likely not return
