I have a Springfield milspec from the 80's and it is a solid steel gun that will take a beating. I picked it up used for just under $500 and would pick up another used at that price anytime. The sights are not great though but that is something you would upgrade if that is what you want to do.

Josh which one do you like? I like Kimbers, and S&Ws do not care for springfield 1911 just a personal choice. Great weapon and platform to shoot and defended yourself on.

I would suggest a couple different options for you. If you want a new pistol the STI Spartan would be my first choice. Springfield Range Officer, Remington R1, or Desert Eagle. Those are around your price range for new.

If you are ok with used and while you are searching for a deal you can possibly save a bit more. If you search a bit you can find a Springfield Loaded, Colt (1970's era), or Dan Wesson.

Most of the modern 1911's are pretty good and can be made great with a little work. Best of luck to ya.

I have had Kimber, Colt 1991a1, Taurus and RIA, for my money it is the later two. Taurus has had some trouble they have in my opinion released some duds..not talking about the 1911 style but others and the reputation carries over even if the problems don't. I am not pistol expert and am not a great pistol shooter...so my needs and yours may be different. The taurus has nice features and mine has been rock solid. The RIA ...not as pretty but rock solid no trouble....and in my hands either is just as accurate as my Kimber...in my hands. My pistol shooting accuracy is about minute of man or in that general direction.
