Being with the Boy Scouts of America for over 10 years (60+ trips logged), my pack always had my EDC, 12" light hatchet, and a Gerber folding saw.
With those three, we always could make our shelters, camp fires, and clear our areas. I believe if you can carry it, have them all !!
BTW... I love my Gerber saws. Very sharp out of the box. Gave one to my new scouts each xmas.

Now that is a way to be remembered as a Scout Leader. And yeah, if you can carry it take it...you'll only have to carry it back, not regret you didn't have it.

Has anyone here ever tried one of the Wire/Chain portable saws. I wonder if they compare to the folding saws. I would think the wire ones would wear out too fast to be really usefull.
