This was a real pants filling moment for the crew of an E-2C Hawkeye as it was landing on the Eisenhower. They came in alright and caught the cable, then it snapped. The pilots were pretty fast acting and managed to keep them out of the drink.

Wow did that hummer drop off the bow. I bet those aircrew had to clean their drawers after that one. Before the cable broke you could see the plane slowing down. They are lucky that plane had enough lift to stay airborne. It looked awful close to being in a stall. Those pilots did a hell of a job keeping themselves out of the water. Hopefully none of the flight decks folks got hurt, they are awful close to the wire when recoveries are taking place. Did two deployments with E-2's. They are a good airplane. My 1st cruise was with S-3's. We launched one of our planes and it dropped below the bow after the catapult shot. They should never do that. When the airplane came back we checked out the flight controls and found there was a flap problem. Watching that plane drop below the bow after it launched was really scary.

Unfortunately There were eight sailors that suffered a variety of injuries, including a fractured ankle, wrist, pelvis and legs. One sailor received skull and facial fractures while another suffered a possible traumatic brain injury.

Man. I got all giggly as I saw the radome slowly appear again over the deck. That was insane! Looking at the forward crew, several of them had the same reaction.

Yes. But look how slow that Hawkeye got. It was almost taxi-ing.

Yes. But can you imagine the load still on that 2" braided steel cable? To Lil Bob's point, the whip when that thing snaps has been fatal more than once.

@ hoosierdoc -- this happens routinely. Part of the job.

This right here is why I saw all those touch-and-goes (bringing down the landing gear and skimming the deck) when we were out with the Ike (yes, the exact same ship in this video).
Drill, drill, drill, then when you get done with that, drill some more.
Sorry to hear about the serious injuries to the flight deck crew, though.
Those guys have arguably the most dangerous job in the Navy.
I personally felt plenty safer sitting in the "bubble," a few feet away from our 22.5" gun barrel during gunshoots.

I thinks it was stated that a flight deck was the most dangerous place.

.
My dad would have held his breath during that entire video.
He was a pilot in the Navy. He told me that in the old days the flight deck crew didn't have all those fancy colored shirts they do now because he flew before color. All they had was black and white and some greys.

As a kid of course I believed him because I saw his B&W photos. (He was kind of a smart ass) :):

Reminds me of that comedian who was on Bob & Tom years ago (Tommy Johnnagan?) who recounted how when he was young and went out to the west coast with his dad driving, they saw a huge windfarm.
The dad told his son that those were the propellers keeping California pushed up against the rest of the continent, and the boy believed it.

Nicely done, clearly from someone who knows from direct knowledge.
