    .
I think anything in a double with screw in chokes is going to get you into the high end money wise.

Anyone know of a sub $250 single shot or sub $400 double barrel 12ga, 20ga or .410 with screw in changeable chokes?
Maybe if H&R comes back with single shot rifles and shotguns again you might find a decent one for that price.

I'll keep my eyes open if I run across something I'll post it.

you guys are bumming me out, just kidding.

I appreciate the responses, this is what I was wondering.
I ask my gunsmith if he could thread a cylinder bore to accept common chokes. He said he could depending on the barrel. That might be an option for you to get an inexpensive shotgun and have your gunsmith thread it.

Not sure if anyone has one in stock but Sportsman's warehouse lists the Stoeger Uplander Supreme 12g SxS for $499. That's a tad more than your shared price point but not by much.

    What's the intended purpose?

I have an o/u with a broken firing pin…. So its a single shot with screw in chokes  :dunno:

I would say pawn shops or classifieds. Most shotguns for whatever reason lose value more so than other modern firearms.

Go to a few pawn shops see if they have any H&R or New England single shots.
My father uses a New England 20ga for years deer hunting here in Indiana.
My 12, 20 and 410 single shots don't have chokes. I've never seen singles with chokes. Was it an uncommon thing for them?

If you really want a nice single shot, you might look for a Henry. My dad bought a Henry single 20g to hunt rabbits with a couple years ago and it's a very nice gun with screw in chokes (rem chokes) and the wood has fantastic checkering and character. I looked them up and saw them listed for $499. It is leaps and bounds nicer than the H&R

IIRC H&R, and New England single shot shotguns came with a choked barrel built in.
You would probably have to buy something higher priced then to get choke tubes.
Nowadays a inexpensive Turkey made single shot has choke tubes.

I'm not very knowledgeable on shotguns hopefully one of our experts will be along to correct me if I gave the wrong information.

Thanks for all the replies, they are appreciated.

It is going to be a multi-purpose, trunk gun, possibly turkey, young shooters, clays, other uses as well.

I like some of the folding ones & those which have a rail, haven't looked at them much till lately when ideas hit me.

It will have very limited use, not something I want to tie much $ into.

In your price range, if you're careful and don't mind used guns, you could get 2 or 3 shotguns, for different purposes. A long or short barreled single shot and a pump, for example, shouldn't be more than 400. Perhaps a receiver with a couple interchangeable barrels would work also, although the second barrel can be as pricy as the original weapon if purchased new.

This is as close as I could get you with a decent brand. A little over $400
