they must have edited out the throngs of people that were shot to make it viewable to the public, because we all know if someone brings an "assault rifle" out in public people are getting shot left and right.

MORE MEN WITH GUNS AT OBAMA EVENT

More men with guns at Obama event - First Read - msnbc.com

In a situation similar to last week in Portsmouth, N.H., cameras caught a protester with a pistol holstered to his leg outside of today's event with the president.

Police on the scene were standing right next to the gentleman and were keeping a close eye on him. He's well behind a security barrier outside the convention center in a crowd of protesters.

A second man, who appeared to be interviewing some of the protesters, also had a pistol strapped to his leg. He was also being watched by police.

To reiterate, there appears to be NO CAUSE FOR SERIOUS CONCERN from local authorities on scene.

*** UPDATE *** After reading our post, the Brady Campaign's President Paul Helmke issued the following statement:

Bringing loaded firearms to any Presidential event endangers all in attendance. Even though our weak national and state gun laws may allow this dangerous behavior, we should use a little common sense. Individuals carrying loaded weapons at these events require constant attention from police and Secret Service officers, thus stretching their protective efforts even thinner. The possibility that these weapons might be grabbed or stolen or accidently mishandled increases the risks of serious injury or death to all in attendance.

The National Rifle Association and other 'gun rights' groups need to send a message about 'gun responsibilities' to their members and all gun owners. Loaded weapons at political forums endanger all involved, distract law enforcement, and end up stifling debate. Presidential protesters need to leave their firearms at home -- no exceptions."

If anyone carried at a Bush event, they would not have cared. Heck, they would have probably tried to talk the guy into taking a shot. So what was most jarring... jarring.... jarring...

Man carrying assault weapon attends Obama protest
By AMANDA LEE MYERS and TERRY TANG (AP) – 50 minutes ago
The Associated Press: Man carrying assault weapon attends Obama protest

PHOENIX — About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Monday — the latest incidents in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.

Gun-rights advocates say they're exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday's event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn't need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested.

The man with the rifle declined to be identified but told The Arizona Republic that he was carrying the assault weapon because he could. "In Arizona, I still have some freedoms," he said.

Phoenix police Detective J. Oliver, who was monitoring the man at the downtown protest, said police also wanted to make sure no one decided to harm him.

"Just by his presence and people seeing the rifle and people knowing the president was in town, it sparked a lot of emotions," Oliver said. "We were keeping peace on both ends."

Last week, during Obama's health care town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., a man carrying a sign reading "It is time to water the tree of liberty" stood outside with a pistol strapped to his leg.

"It's a political statement," he told The Boston Globe. "If you don't use your rights, then you lose your rights."

Police asked the man to move away from school property, but he was not arrested.
Phoenix was Obama's last stop on a four-day tour of western states, including Montana and Colorado.

Authorities in Montana said Monday they received no reports of anyone carrying firearms during Obama's health care town hall near Bozeman on Friday. About 1,000 people both for and against Obama converged at a protest area near the Gallatin Field Airport hangar where the event took place. One person accused of disorderly conduct was detained and released, according to the Gallatin Airport Authority.

Heather Benjamin of Denver's Mesa County sheriff's department, the lead agency during Obama's visit there, said no one was arrested.

Arizona is an "open-carry" state, which means anyone legally allowed to have a firearm can carry it in public as long as it's visible. A permit is required if the weapon is carried concealed.

Paul Helmke, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said people should not be allowed to bring guns to events where Obama is.

"To me, this is craziness," he said. "When you bring a loaded gun, particularly a loaded assault rifle, to any political event, but particularly to one where the president is appearing, you're just making the situation dangerous for everyone."
He said people who bring guns to presidential events are distracting the Secret Service and law enforcement from protecting the president. "The more guns we see at more events like this, there's more potential for something tragic happening," he said.

A call to a Secret Service spokesman was not immediately returned Monday.

The National Rifle Association also did not return a call for comment.

    open carry=open carry!!
He did nothing wrong, good for him!!
The point is that regardless of what type of open event he is at, it is his right to open carry!

I heard during the video that local law enforcement and secret service had formed a semi circle around him, "just in case"-

This just prooves that responsible gun owners follow the law, are not a threat to anyone including the president and that our 2nd amendment should not be touched!

He showed professionalism, responsibilty-of a gun owner. :rockwoot:

I remember a member here trying to get some of us to do this.

Just shows me it can be done.

If done, it should be done right. This black gentleman did it right. He was well dressed, nicer dressed than anyone in the crowd and as nice as the reporter (and as nice as the lawyer he probably has on retainer). He presented himself as peaceful and held his composure. No shouting, no strutting, no antics of any kind. The fact that he was black was simply a bonus because the anti-gun media can't deride him a some sort of a white racist (as they have been) or some sort of right wing white militia type (as they have been) or some rural white bubba (as they also have claimed). He really was pretty much the perfect gun owner to attend and the gun he carried was certainly a gun that makes a statement.

Heck I loved how the reporter said it was his first time ever seeing an AR15 and how he so calmly stated he was only a couple feet away the gun.

"The Secret Service must be wondering if this is going to become a trend"

Yeah, those pesky trends where law abiding citizens exercise their rights without regard to the feelings of other people. Or maybe its the trend that people are bringing weapons to these rallies and AREN'T shooting at the POTUS, is that an unusual trend? Or is it the trend of people who aren't calling for the removal of the POTUS, they certainly aren't used to that from the Bush years. So, which trend is it that these nervous nellies at CNN think the Secret Service is worried about?

I also enjoyed the sentiment that "the black guy was doing it cause he saw people 'on the other side doing it'" They immediately assumed this guy was pro-obama.

Twelve Carry Guns -- Including Assault Rifle -- Outside Obama Event
    By Rachel Slajda - August 17, 2009, 5:54PM
Twelve Carry Guns -- Including Assault Rifle -- Outside Obama Event | LiveWire

Several people carried guns at rallies outside an event where President Obama was speaking.

About 12 people were carrying guns, including at least one semi-automatic assault rifle, outside a building where President Obama was speaking today.

No one was arrested outside the VFW National Convention in Phoenix, according to the Associated Press, where hundreds of people demonstrated both for and against health care reform. There are no reports that the 12 were part of an organized group.

The man spotted carrying the assault rifle and a pistol, who gave his name only as "Chris", was asked why he was armed. "Because I can do it," he said. "In Arizona, I still have some freedoms." You can watch the video from ArizonaCentral.com (go to about 1:30). He's being interviewed by a man who's also wearing a handgun.

Two police officers kept close by. Carrying guns, including the AR-15 assault rifle, is legal under Arizona law.

"If we need to intervene, we will intervene at that time," said Detective J. Oliver.

CNN's Ed Henry reported seeing a second man with an assault rifle, but that has not been confirmed.

These reports come less than a week after two people brought guns to a presidential event in Portsmouth, N.H. At Obama's town hall there, one man was arrested for having a gun hidden in his car after the Secret Service found him at Portsmouth High School hours before Obama arrived carrying a pocketknife. He didn't have a license for a concealed weapon.

Another man in Portsmouth was spotted carrying a gun in a leg holster outside the school. The unconcealed weapon was legal under New Hampshire law and he was not arrested. Later, when asked why he brought the gun, he replied, "That's not even a relevant question. The question is, why don't people bear arms these days?"

And that's not all. A man brought a gun to a town hall with Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) last week, without incident. At an event with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), someone dropped a gun, but he had a permit and no police report was taken. And two weeks ago, a New Mexico man tweeted that reform opponents should bring guns to town halls and "badly hurt" SEIU reps.

I am honestly suprised that some kind of law isnt put into place banning firearms at "Obama" rallies. Seems like its happening more and more. Granted there is nothing wrong with it since everyone is following the law.

I am just suprised that something hasnt been established-
I am sure the SS is really starting to "pucker" (and you know what I mean) over such events!

+1 though for the AR support!!
