So when did a 50% discount for buying two of something become a mere 25% discount?

Annoys me too. It should therefore be advertised as BOGO* since the literal translation is Buy One Get One, and any other terms should require a disclaimer.
It's the same marketing firm that realized they could both increase the price and diminish the portion size. i.e. Hostess Cupcakes, Reese Cups, etc.
