Just as I wouldn't want to chop down a tree with a butter knife. Ha.I tend to lean in the direction of larger blades as well.
However, I wouldn't want to do brain surgery with a 7" bowie. It does depend a bit on the task at hand.

And this is why there are many different types and sizes of fixed blades. They each have their own purpose.
I am a big fan of the bigger blades. I have always been from the school of thought that a bigger blade can still do a smaller blades work just not as well but a smaller blade can't do the bigger blades work.
That being said I am a lover of bushcraft blades also so medium sized blades work well for me also.
