Several years ago, I bought a Ruger 77/22. While it was "OK", I wanted something that would match my centerfire Rugers (300 win mag, 30-06, 257 roberts) exactly. So I sent it off to Clark Custom Guns for their 77/22 "special". I got a .920 barrel on it, they did a phenominal trigger job on it and I slapped a 3-9 scope on it. The thing shoots like a dream and is murder on squirrels. It is within a few ounces of my bigger Ruger rifles that wear the same exact scope. Now I can use it to practice with (obviously at shorter ranges) and I get the same shooting experience. Love the gun!

For the money, it's hard to beat the Savage Mk II or the Marlin that Simon6101 mentioned.

For some decent coin, then the CZ 542 is the bee's knees, man.

Heard the Kimber rifles are quite nice, too.

For big money, anything that says Anschutz on it.
