That Dragunov is a 7.62 x 54r. As far as I know our military doesn't use 7.62 x 39 much. But, it was on tv:)

Here is some info on the appleseed. The Appleseed Project Little history as well. A few of our memebers here are instructors as well.

Thanks but what is an "appleseed" and where do I sign up?? I've been going to JP for years but sure wish someone had a range where you could reach out to 500 yards or so. I haven't heard of anywhere in NW Indiana to do that - have you?

No public ranges that is for sure. Currently I shoot on a friends 40 acres for our long range shooting.

turnandshoot. I don't doubt you but I swear it was x39 for both sides. That's what struck me as unsual. Again like you said it was on TV.

It sad to see the spetsnaz guy out shoot the green beret in the running pistol shoot. GB 3 kills i mortal wound, 1 non -life threatening. Spetsnaz 5 kills one between the eyes....

It's was Makarov VS Berretta. Although it just could've been that particular russian was better tha that particluar American.

OK sorry for the minor derail.

I have no real knowledge here but FWIW:

The Deadliest Warrior episode that did Green Beret VS Spetsnaz had both groups using a 7.62x39. The russians of course had the Drouganov I forget which gun the Green Berets had but it was a 7.62 x39 as well.

Suprised me that either one used that caliber for sniping. Although maybe they have a shorter distance for their type of "long shot" ? :dunno:

im 100% sure that episode was 7.62x54 vs .308. that is probably my favorite episode

before you even think about putting a ultimate sniper stock on that savage check this guy out....
Stockade Gun Stocks - specializing in custom rifles
he makes great products and if you can fill/sand/finish/and paint then you can pick up a cheap stock for around 250 and finish it yourself.... for what you are wanting to do i would look into the prairie dog stock..... and fwiw spend more on the scope than you do on the rifle, it will matter.

The .308 would serve you well for what you are describing.

However, the 6.5/284 that was previously suggested has a much higher ballistic coefficient and will require less adjustment at the longer ranges than the .308.
If, at 800 yards you are using 4 minutes of wind with a 6.5/284 you can expect to use 6 to 7 minutes with a .308. That is approximately 16" to 24" more deflection.

These are approximate values and based on personal experience with a 142 grain bullet in 6.5/284 and 155 to 175 grain bullets in .308.

.308, .30-06, and 7mm-08 would all work. If hunting is in the future, I would ask, "hunting what?"

How much do you want to spend?:D Kind of like , how fast do you want to go? Ever heard of Thompson long range? They use a Weatherby 30-378 .
You can take their course and buy the rifle for a package deal of about $4700. Ouch! They have some videos on Youtube. One is of a 830 yard Elk kill. I believe the other is a 600 + yard Antelope kill. Now that's some long range shooting. Maybe if I hit the lottery.:D

The original question was for a rifle for mid range target shooting and for deer hunting "out west", as I recall. If this is what you were asking, none of the prone sniper stocks are suitable for hunting deer "out west". Where is "out west" BTW? You gotta have a rifle you can carry after all...

IMO, just get you a standard hunting rifle in any centerfire caliber that interests you and tune it to shoot the best groups that it can with your reloaded ammo. 6.5mm, 7mm, 270, 308, 30.06 and many others will get it done for deers and targets.

If you get serious about a target rifle later, then build or buy that target rifle.

Good advice - thanks. I plan on getting into the works with a Savage 110FP in .308. It's definitely within my price range and upgradeable for now. As I learn the art of long range, I'll adapt to something custom.

the savage should be a good start. i have a 10fp .308 with the factory stock. shoots 5 shots under 1 inch at 100yards. loaned it to my boss for a pronghorn hunt a few years ago. never hunted before and shot a rifle only a few times before. ran a couple boxs thru my rifle before hunt. his was the first pronghorn shot. 1 shot at 200 yards. good out west gun just would not want to carry all day

THe best sniper rounds are exotic types like the 338 Lapua. But for my use I would want a much cheaper round that I can get from any store, anywhere. The 5.56 or .308 will fit the bill but don't underestimate the 6.5mm rounds. The Sedish 6.5x55 used in their Mausers is a very fast flat round.

It really depends on what you want to do at 250+ yrds. the Ar 15 does well at 200-300 yrds. And the do shoot these rifles to 600 yrds at Camp Perry. And it cheaper to shoot. Probably not enough energy left to take out more than a prarie dog at 600. But I have known a couple of people that take Varmits out to 300 with ARs
