    You can find some nice Kimbers under a grand...I'd personally look for a gently used full size Kimber, Colt, or SA. One that was about $1300 to $1400 MSRP and probably sold for around $1200 new. It'll put you into the "really nice" 1911 owners group and you'll really enjoy your gun!
