I have no idea how a hawk would ever allow you to get within 100 feet, let alone 15!
There has been a nesting pair of Barred Owls behind my house for at least the last 4 years. See them regularly and hear them every night, especially in the summer. They've had 2 chicks each of the last 4 years.
"Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all."
8 whoots with that guttural at the end. They also make weird hisses and clicks.

I've only seen one of these on two occasions.
They're much less common in this area than are Screech and Great Horned owls...
