Asteroid Flies by Earth Thursday: How to Watch Online

A newfound asteroid that may be the size of three football fields will whiz by Earth on Thursday (Sept. 13), and you can watch the close encounter live online.

Asteroid 2012 QG42 is between 625 feet to 1,400 feet wide (190 to 430 meters) and was first spotted by scientists last month. Researchers say the space rock has no chance of hitting Earth this week when it makes its closest approach on Thursday.

umm, we just found it last week. we don't know an exact size, but we do know you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, this doesn't make much sense. I can see knowing its trajectory, but we should have it's dimensions down to 1m and its mass within a few hundred kg by now. Of course, as sloppy as things have gotten lately, sense is probably too much to expect.
