I started collecting parts for an AR build back in January, picking up stuff here and there on paydays. This is my SHTF battle rifle, so I'm trying to have a good mix of quality and value. I'm basically down to a final few things and looking for recommendations.

Muzzlebreak/flash hider for a DD 16in mid-length barrel - I've seen some hype around the Battlecomp, but it seems to have died down. If it's worth it, I'll save up for one, if not, I'm open for suggestions.

Sling - open to suggestions, I like single/ 2 point options, I'm a pretty round fellow, so I guess I have to keep that in mind while I work on getting some pounds off.

Sling Plate - don't know pro/cons of various options

Back Irons - again, open to opinions

Red dot - seems the Primary Arms leads in recent suggestions, wondering what I gain if I stick with irons and save awhile for an Aimpoint H-1?

I would also like to mount my Fenix TK-15, anything stand out as far as mounts? I think Fenix makes a mount, but figured I would ask.

Nothing wrong with the standard A2 version, I have a battlecomp, it does what it claims and is good, decide after shooting for a while if you want to spend the $ on it to stay on target for faster follow up shots.

Good option is a Vickers VCAS and adding a IWC conversion slide piece for single point use.

Sling Plate - don't know pro/cons of various options

The Noveske QD plate is low profile and a good option

Back Irons - again, open to opinions

Folding or non? Non folding - Daniel Defense, folding - Troy

Red dot - seems the Primary Arms leads in recent suggestions, wondering what I gain if I stick with irons and save awhile for an Aimpoint H-1?

The PA are fine for a training rifle, but if this is going to be your main rifle save up for the AimPoint

mounts will be dependent on your handguard type

Nothing wrong with the standard A2. Also, check out Rainier Arms. Their brake/flash hiders have a 90-day money back guarantee

Magpul MS2 and the VTac slings are good value with options of doing both
Sling Plate - don't know pro/cons of various options
Noveske QD, IKickHippies SLAP are good options
Back Irons - again, open to opinions
Magpul is probably the best value, otherwise find a used set of Troys or Midwest Industries
Red dot - seems the Primary Arms leads in recent suggestions, wondering what I gain if I stick with irons and save awhile for an Aimpoint H-1?
Aimpoint will get you crazy battery life. As a battle rifle you could literally leave it on for years.
I would also like to mount my Fenix TK-15, anything stand out as far as mounts? I think Fenix makes a mount, but figured I would ask.
VTac light mounts are good for the money

Thanks for outlining your intended purpose and budget first. This helps. :yesway:

You may have seen me write this before-- the BattleComp is a great muzzle device and works fantastically. But, I don't think its worth the $160 price tag.

Are you more concerned with reducing flash or having some compensation effect?

For hiding flash, the standard A2 actually works pretty darn well.

For a budget comp, check out the YHM Phanton 5C2 Comp. Its about $25 and does a pretty darn good job, even compared to other more expensive comps.

I'd take a look at the many 2-to-1 slings currently available. VTAC, Vickers, Magpul, Urban ERT, etc. Go padded if its an option.

    Here is a U-ERT review: https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...gear/71290-review_urban_ert_sling_for_m4.html

Sling Plate - don't know pro/cons of various options

I'm a big fan of running QD swivels. Therefore I'm also a huge fan of the $25 Noveske endplate with QD mount.

Back Irons - again, open to opinions

    Troy.

Red dot - seems the Primary Arms leads in recent suggestions, wondering what I gain if I stick with irons and save awhile for an Aimpoint H-1?

    Budget - Primary Arms Micro

Real Deal - Aimpoint Micro H1/T1

I would also like to mount my Fenix TK-15, anything stand out as far as mounts? I think Fenix makes a mount, but figured I would ask.

The VTAC mount is super versatile and solid. Also inexpensive. If you can take the cigar ring of the TK15 it should fit.

We've all heard the phrase "thick as thieves". You guys are "similar as snobs".

I would've answered differently if I was giving my snob answer :p

And for the record... I guess I have to blame esrice. That guy is good at spending your money for you.

My take is that you have already come this far in building a quality rifle, don't stop here. Don't start settling on parts or you will want more in the long run costing you more.

Muzzlebreak/flash hider for a DD 16in mid-length barrel - I've seen some hype around the Battlecomp, but it seems to have died down. If it's worth it, I'll save up for one, if not, I'm open for suggestions.
As esrice stated, that's up to you on which benefit you are looking for. For now you could leave the A2 until you decide if you want something else and buy a more important piece like your irons or sling plate or sling

Sling - open to suggestions, I like single/ 2 point options, I'm a pretty round fellow, so I guess I have to keep that in mind while I work on getting some pounds off.
I am really starting to love the Savvy Sniper slings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny5b7VXUU78 Now his was way decked out, you can get the more simple slings for much cheaper.

Depends on which attachment you want to go with. If you want QD go with Noveske. If you want HK, Mash hooks, or any other hooks, go with the SLAP from Ikickhippies.com I don't like the ASAP because it has a piece that rattles around and you have to search to find it making it 2 hand operation not one like the others.
Back Irons - again, open to opinions
    Troy and don't settle.
Red dot - seems the Primary Arms leads in recent suggestions, wondering what I gain if I stick with irons and save awhile for an Aimpoint H-1?
You gain a sight that is top notch. Escort or Ferrari? My primary arms you can see the emitter in the lower right field of view. You won't be able to see that in the Aimpoint. You get a much better battery life with the Aimpoint and a much more solid product. Buy the Troy's and shoot with them while saving for a H-1.

I would also like to mount my Fenix TK-15, anything stand out as far as mounts? I think Fenix makes a mount, but figured I would ask.
Might check out the Haley Strategic mounts, other than that the others already listed are good too.

    bargersville, in
the only answer i have is on the red dot. i have friends that have "cheaper" or "less expensive" red dots. they like them, they make shooting easier. i bought the aimpoint under the premise that they have a reputation of being virtually indestructible. with the quick disconnect mount (larue) i have had it on and off the rifle at least 100 times and not lost my 50 yard zero. i say save the money for the aimpoint, buy once, cry once. if the poo does contact the spinning blades while it is raining, you are gonna be happy you spent the money. also a 50,000 hour battery life (micro t-1) means you can leave it on on accident and not have to worry about it. thats roughly 5 years of constant on. in shtf, you might not be able to find too many batteries so efficiency is good. just my .02

I would do exactly what I did on my carbine.

fixed daniel defense sights, aimpoint red dot, simple sling.

The sling REALLY doesnt matter, but in general, the more whiz bang things they say they do, the worse they are in real life.

Even if they have a cool name like "Saavy Sniper, VCAS, Ares Armor Amentum etc.".

All you need is a 2 point strap thats the right length FOR YOU.

You can do this the old fashioned way, without sliders, quick adjust detach whoozits, and other $$$$ cool stuff.

    Its called.. scissors. :)

1903 sling for DMR style guns, and a simple canvas strap for carbines is all I will ever do in the future.

Edit: Slings have two purposes. Retention, and in assistance with accuracy. GENERALLY those two are unrelated. The slings that help with accuracy arent the best for quick movement and retention.

The ones that try to do both USUALLY fail in some way.

So put accuracy type slings on guns for long range accuracy, and retention type slings on guns for blasting. Thats my opinion.

Just to feed the thread a little.

I have a loaner Aimpoint from a buddy, so I'm not in a hurry and will probably save up for an H-1, don't need the night vision features of the T-1.

Have a nice used Knight rail, so that's what the light and flip up sights will go on. I'll be doing front and rear flip ups as I went with the Daniel Defense low profile gas block, figured Troy's seem to be the standard.

I wouldn't fuss about little things like a muzzle break. Get a good upper and lower and you'll have a fine weaponJ

Roger that, figured I would at least ask.

I work with guys at Crane that REALLY know the platform well, but it's always fun to have a thread and talk about guns n stuff too :ingo:

oh... and should I assume the BCM Gunfighter in MED is the current favorite?

Yes. Small is tiny and large is HUYUGE.

Also, its the thing that lays across your chest when slung, the large will poke ya in the breastbone.

The med still does a bit, but the small doesnt at all.

    For me.
