    So, the forward assist does not rest against the bolt, but is spring loaded away from the bolt?
    Is he likely to push it forward as the gun recoils and will it being forward keep the bolt from closing?

    yes it has a spring that keeps it out, if it is pressed when the bolt is operating it could damage the bolt and upper receiver and may even break his thumb

    In the funny picture thread is an image of a shooter with his thumb on what I believe is called the forward assist. What will happen if he pulls the trigger with his thumb resting there?

    Nothing, since the forward assist on that particular "gun" is probably non-functional. :):

    At least the rifle bearer in the above photo is using "proper technique"...

    The pistolero shown seems to be cross-eye dominant...

    Can't have the face angled correctly; it'd hide it from the camera!

    Some Sci-Fi Channel monster movie of the week would be my guess.

    Obviously a bad one. It looks like from that pic that it would be one of those really horrible ones that might be fun to laugh at all the crap they got wrong.
