I personally have had mixed results with steel cased ammo never had any real extraction issues, I get mainly partial jams aka, bolt not going fully into battery, a quick SPORTS maneuver clears it and its back in action, don't seem to have this problem with brass. It think its mainly cause the steel ammo I've ran has been quite dirty, AR's don't like built up gunk and crap internally, give it a good cleaning and plink away.

:): I LOL @ you steel ammo haters. I ran through hundreds of rounds of cheap MFS zinc plated steel today without a hitch nearly scoring rifleman out to 400 yards. :rockwoot:

You would not be laughing if you really needed the gun and it jammed. Just saying. Steel may run OK in your piece but it has not done well in any of mine so it is just not even considered. If it sticks and acts weird then damage could result. I want to buy more guns and ammo, not spend time and money repairing what I have.

No slam brother, just saying, would you put cheap gas in a new Corvette. I hope not.

    Be safe, enjoy, carry on.......................;)

    Update

OK, gave the upper a good cleaning, removed the firing pin, and the other big pieces. Scrubbed the chamber with the brass brush on a drill. Lubed and oiled well, removed excess oil then reassembled.

Rifle went back together great, almost looked "new" again (minus the scratch in the barrel).

Went back to the range (with steel TulAmmo & Wolf .223) and fired away WITHOUT a hitch. Notta issue at all. Hundred rounds in three different magazines. For now, I'm sticking with the steel & clean a bit more often.

So, I'm "blaming" the rifle for being dirty. I guess I like them clean (guns, girls & cars).............

Thanks everybody for your input, this INGO crowd knows their stuff and is passionate about it.

Had very similar problems with a brand new Stag AR I bought several weeks ago. Bought 1K steel rounds with the gun as well as some brass. When shooting brass, ran like a champ. Start a mag of steel, had a jam within ten rounds. Clear the jam, run three or four mags of brass without a problem. Feed a mag of steel, another jam within a few rounds.

Multiple folks who I trust took a look, cleaned, well lubed, extractor working correctly, etc...... same result. Benched the steel and went to shooting brass and have not had one single problem. Maybe the steel ammo is ok for others, but for me, it's just not worth fooling with.

A couple questions for the wise ones here:

    1) I was told by someone that the weapon needed "broken in" with several hundred rounds of brass, then the steel would run fine. Anyone know why this would be or if this is the case?

    2) I was told by someone else that there are several manufacturers making steel .223 who are also manufacturing it with steel jacketed bullets that will wear down the barrel more quickly. Any truth to that either?

For me... it's just simpler to run brass and the cost is worth not worrying about the headache. Not to mention, I have a friend who wants to get me into reloading anyway...
