OK so how do I check the gas system to make sure its properly working?
You can try running a small pipe cleaner in there to see otherwise you're going to have to flush it with liquid.
If it comes out clear, shoot it again. As the other guy said, lube the hell out of it. If you're still having issues you'll need to check the gas block alignment, though if one mag worked I bet that's fine. Check the gas key on the BCG. Make sure it's aligned and clear.
What buffer weight are you running? 20" barrel I am assuming it's a rifle length gas system.

So last night I had a build project that I'd been wanting to get done. The idea was going to be pretty simple, but that's not how they always end up of course. Anyway, I wanted a 14.5" lightweight pinned/welded upper, on the most compact fixed stock I could find. I have nothing against collapsible stocks, and I have many of them, but once I get them in the second or third position I never move them again. I thought the new magpul MOE Fixed stock was in that range for total length. It's not and if anything it's towards the longer side of an AR-15 stock. Anyway, I took a bunch of pictures with stocks and another rifle to get a decent comparison between the two. Here they are.

In addition to the fixed stock, I was going to try out the new magpul slim line handguard. I didn't really care about the slimness of it, I just like that the handguard went out around the front sight post and gave me a little more real estate to grab ahold of. For whatever reason, I couldn't figure out the trick to getting the handguard on. Having swabbed more handguards than I can recall I was a little frustrated that I couldn't get this simple task done even after removing the front sling swivel. Ultimately, I just put the MOE handguards back on it for the time being.

By the time it was all said and done, I struck out on the stock I wanted, and I struck out on getting the handguards installed. Otherwise, it's all good.

Does your front handguard have a triangular end cap? If it does, the Slimline handguard won't work. Those only work with round end caps.

So a cerakoting company I follow on instagram put up a post with a woodland pattern and asked someone to send him a rifle to try out the desert version on for half of the usual price. I sent him a picture of my rifle and he chose it, so I packed it up and mailed it out a couple of weeks ago. Just got this email as a sort of "teaser." I dig it so far :)

Would have liked to have seen pictures with it against an adjustable stock at half and full lengths.

This is another preview shot I got from him. I thought he was going to take more pics but I was wrong. When it gets here in a few days I'll tighten everything up and try to take a decent picture. I'm really pleased with how it looks, even though I didn't have any say in what it would look like :D
