Any SKS owners on here find a GOOD optic mount? For a reasonable price. I've seen a few running anywhere from $65 to $107. I know the dust cover one suck, but they seem to put the optic in the correct spot. Front sight group has already been cut off, so now I'm kinda committed. LOL:dunno:

The SKS is a carbine, it was not designed to have or need a scope.

But, there are a very small number of effective optic mounts, none of which are dust cover or sight block mounted.

The only ones I have seen that truly work is the mil-surp receiver mount ones like the Yugo Zrak M89 and Zrak 0N-2 or modern mounts with drilled and tapped screws into the side of the receiver and the stock cut for relief.

Vitamink- I've seen the SGW kit. And all though it is one sweet design, I'm not wanting to put that much into "this" one. Next one however, it is a MUST do, cuz it's cool. And K_W, I don't want to scope it. Just a red dot. Putting a scope on an SKS is like putting 20" rims on an Escort. But now I must look for one of these mil-surp mounts you speak of. Thank you both very much for the help and suggestions. Got some more digging to do.:ingo:

If your going to do it do it right, and yes SKS'S had optics on them see image

Thats a rail mount from the factory to install optics, and nightvision.

    So

    To do it PROPER
Go over to Kalinka optics and get yourself the ZENIT rail mount for SKS
Then find yourself a nice authentic NORINCO optics mount and glass or buy one of the optics there.
    install.

    :blahblah:
There were occasional sniper models made for the SKS, and other models such as the SKS50, AKS53 and the AKs51-A Although From what Ive read most of these that came in have the mount attached or the mount has been removed. Like mentioned above no country wanted to invest heavily in a platform that was limited due to the ballistics of the X39 but countries have made sniper versions with ZRAKS, PSO's etc.

The comment to where carbines don't use an optic, had me thinkin....
Did Ruskies ever mount a PU or ?? to a m38 or m44? I know they loved em on the 47 and 74...
Were optics ever mounted on a .30 m1 carbine, I know some had Starlight/nightvision/infrared in Vietnam but optics?

Thanks for all the options and opinions guys. I think one or two of you belong to the SKS forum also, and are just baiting me. LOL. Spending over $30 for a mount on a $300 HEAVILY modified rifle makes my skin crawl a bit. It is nothing but a range toy. But Im working on reaming out and reattaching my original front sight. That will have to do till after the holidays. For some reason kids like presents on Christmas......go figure. Again I thank you all for sounding off:rockwoot:

While folks don't generally like 'em, you may find that the humble dust cover rail is adequate for your purposes. Shouldn't be that much to pick a used one up, and give it a try?

I found this on Midway. It's just a 4X. Want it more for the tacticool than function.

Like Allan said, cool looking, sucks to use. About 10+ years ago I bought a cover with scope rings on it, completely sucked at holding zero as did the tapco one that mounted on the gas tube. I learned to just enjoy them with irons.

Save the money for the mount and get the sgworks bullpup. Unfortunately they just increased their prices by $25 last Monday. I purchased it Sunday and received it Friday afternoon. Install was pretty simple with a little sanding. Shot 80rds Saturday and everything was fine.
