Bank robbed this afternoon; police searching for suspect
    By Nicole Brooks 331-4232 | nbrooks@heraldt.com

Police this hour are searching for a suspect in a bank robbery.

A man displayed a handgun and robbed the United Commerce Bank at 1285 S. College Mall Road just before 1 p.m., said Lt. David Drake with the Bloomington Police Department.

He is described as a white male with a shaved head with one or two days’ growth. He has no facial hair, was wearing a black button-down shirt, is 5 foot 10 inches or a little taller, has a medium build and is in his mid to late 30s, Drake said.

A hold-up alarm was received from the bank at 12:47 p.m.

No one was injured, and the man left with money, Drake said.

The suspect left on foot. Police have called in two canines to search for him.
If you have information on this suspect, call the police department at 339-4477.
    This story will be updated.

Bank robber wanted in four states
    By Nicole Brooks 331-4232 | nbrooks@heraldt.com
    August 28, 2009

The suspect in today’s bank robbery is the same man wanted by the FBI in connection with at least ten bank robberies in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

A Bloomington Police Department officer said their investigation into the robbery at United Commerce Bank, 1285 S. College Mall Rd., has been turned over to the FBI.

The FBI is searching for Chad Schaffner, 36, who has been described as armed and dangerous, Special Agent Wendy Osborne said.

Schaffner was released from the Indiana Department of Correction in December of last year after serving time for armed robbery.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.

Trigger discipline like that, someone is likely to get shot. Hopefully they catch this guy so they have another chance to reform him through our "justice" system.

Crime is going to get worse. We are taking billions of tax dollars for sports stadiums, airports, and convention centers, yet we have a serious jail over crowding problem. Some states have a prison over crowding problem. Indiana has enough space to bring in prisoners from other states, yet we release repeat criminals. Why isn't the government(s) liable for releasing these animals so they can turn right back around and prey upon innocent people? If this guy ends up shooting someone, the government should be held liable. They take our money and claim it is to keep us safe, then turn around and use it for stupid non-essential projects while allowing dangerous criminals to roam the countryside.

At least most people in most states still have the right to arm themselves. If the government doesn't want to protect the population, I guess it is up to the people themselves.

So how long is "long enough"? How do you know if someone is rehabilitated? Do we keep people locked up forever? For every crime? We already have the highest percentage of our population locked up for any industrialized country.

I often think about my reaction in a bank if the guy next to me moves to rob it. There have been so many as of late, and yet this guy looks to be the first who is the real deal as opposed to people just asking for the money and getting it.

Times are getting bad and I need to practice more.

Maybe this loser will resist when the "Po Po" finally catch up to him and they blow his *** away :shoot:. IMHO that would be one less scumbag for the tax payers to feed and a start on the overcrowded prison problem.

they should be put away for _life_, or in your words "forever." I am sick of multiple repeat offenders constantly getting released to harm innocent people. Now this guy will get another 10-15 years, likely released in five to ten, and hopefully won't be pulling the trigger on his future robberies.

Wait a minute, got out of jail last year and he robbed a bank with a handgun? It's illegal for a convicted felon to possess a firearm, let alone a handgun! Where's are law enforcement, where's the prosecutor? I want protection!

I sure hope to meet him someday!! Venture to say when he gets popped he will be a resister. He is one of those who have nothing to loose.

He is one of those who have nothing to loose.

That was my thought as well. Guys like this one are a little scary, because you've just gotta wonder when he will make the call that he's 'tired of going back to prison' and wants to make a stand or simply eliminate a witness or two.

Great comment earlier by tenring as well about how laws against convicted felons owning or posessing firearms being illegal just don't work. The underlying issue here is that he has made a determination that he wants to commit a crime (read into that "already illegal") and another law restricting guns, carrying in a bank, or anything else would not have mattered. That's the part the anti-gun crowd just can't get their minds around.

I'm just glad that no one was physically harmed. Make no mistake that people WERE hurt in that bank, but thank God no one was shot or beaten. :xmad:

Yeah, I agree that he would be a good candidate for life in prison.

I wasn't arguing that nobody should get life, just that there's got to be guidelines. Some feel two strikes would be enough. We know we've had fairness issues with the three strikes laws & mandatory sentencing taking discretion away from judges. I guess I'm OK with it not being easy for the government to send someone away for a really long time.
In this case, though, somebody screwed up. Who should be held accountable? The prosecutor? judge? jury?

OTOH, It's too bad that there wasn't somebody there with their own gun to end his crime spree. I wouldn't have any problem with that as it would be a case of justifiable self-sefense.
