I wouldn't use the kind that is mounted to the receiver dust cover they won't stay in place and lose zero. I don't know what kind of AK were talking about but some you can mount a side mount on and I her they work pretty good . If your just wanting a red dot there are several options maybe fore stock with a rail on top of your gas tube. I just replaced my iron sights with night sights Meprolight with windage adjustment on rear sight. Did the trick for me. OFFICERSTORE.COM 83.99

    putting this on the reciever.

the reciever didnt come w/ anything on it, and a customer wants one put on... i am having trouble w/ a few things, like if i should drill and tap it to put it on, or if i should use rivots like the original design calls for. also, how to install it while keeping it concentric w/ the bore.

    Try this link---
    Russian Optics Rail Installation

I've used the ones in the pics top left---a little different than the one you have but these instructions will work I should think. one note of caution---if you have a mil-spec receiver it will be hard (41rc) so you might ruin a bit or two. I use cobalt bits fwiw.
