No offense, but this idea has been floated a million times. Everyone serious enough to actually start talking to the people in charge of approving such a place has figured out that it just isn't going to get approved.

    Good luck though...

If you are looking for suggestion, the most important thing I look for in a public indoor range is a full time range officer. I will walk out of any range that rents a gun to a couple of video game Rambos and turns them loose to sweep the whole the firing line while trying to figure out how to use it.

Keep it safe, or shut it down.

My second consideration is the air quality.

If you run a safe range that I can visit without having black rings around my nostrils, I'm there.

Would like to see it but...

Like some one else has said the cost involved would be a bunch of $$$$.
I would love one on the NE side. Ventilation is key, also the ability to fire center fire rifles. Granted firming a Rifle at 25yrds is not that much of a challenge but sometimes I just want to feel the recoil! And an annual Membership, that would grant at least 1 hour of range time a day per year. I rarely spend more than an hour at an indoor range. The thing is while I appreciate the the ability to use rifles at BGF at the cost to use the range it is kinda a wash between the gas it takes to go to Wilbur Wright and the cost of range time from where I live (unless gas keeps skyrocketing!). Plus it only costs me $110 for a membership at MCFG for all the pistol time I want. just can't use CF rifles unless they are pistol caliber. There are a lot of old industrial sites on this side of town the could be turned into a range, good luck to you if you decide to proceed.

My associates and I have looked into it quite a bit. To be competitive an indoor range in the Indianapolis area QUICKLY got far our of our financial means and have resorted to researching outdoor possibilities.

NRA puts out a LOT of good information to help get started. Your two biggest issues are going to be funding the costs and getting the local area to approve it. I know what Marion County requires to open a facility, but can't speak of surrounding counties. Research long and hard before putting pen to paper.

    Indoor steel & ventilation

Go shoot at Beech Grove. Feel that breeze at your back and watch the smoke go down range. That's the kind of ventilation you need.

Somebody mentioned shooting steel indoors. Just an observation. Years ago, perhaps before many members here were born, there was an indoor range near Emerson & 465. Just west of the bowling alley. They decided it would be cool to shoot free-standing steel silhouettes indoors............until they realized bullets were ricocheting out through their roof! I saw the result myself.

I would visit an indoor range on the NE side. The nearest indoor range is Pop Guns, and I wasn't super impressed with the folks there. Options for shooting seated would be awesome.

Heck, even just a gun shop would do well up there. Right now, there is Gouger Mountain and a collective of obscure, do it out of my garage FFLs. If someone opened an actual, factual shop up there, carried a decent line (not just high end rifles/shotguns thinking they would sell to the, well, let's face it, upscale clientele of North Indy), and not put it in a high value location even close to Carmel, they would stand to make a few bucks and then some.

I've visited Indianapolis-area indoor ranges and I've noticed the long lines and lack of options.

I'm currently exploring an opportunity to open a safe, fun indoor pistol/rifle range in northeast Indianapolis.

I would be interested in any feedback from you. What options you would like to see (paper target carriers? Static or knockdown reset steel targets?) If you live in the area how often would you go? What are issues you have with other indoor ranges? What do you want in an indoor range?

    Erin R.

I would love to see it. It needs to be big enough, to handle customers, that if you want to give members, first in line privilege, then other customers won't have to wait in line, for over an hour.
Centerfire rifles, a big plus, esp., AR type rifles, as well as other Mil., type rifles. Mosins, Mausers, and .30 Carbine..... :twocents:
