I am 9mil all the way now for self def. About 13-15 years ago I sold all my 40's after directly seeing the results of several police shootings in my area and actually getting to talk to the shooters about the shoots. My wife, while not weak at all and shoots around 10K rounds per year between rifle, shotgun and handgun, handles the 9mil much better. Ammo cost is also much less for the 4000 average rounds we go thru in a year.

Mine too, which is why i just traded my glock 23 for a glock 19. Plus, buying 9, 40 and 45 ammo was getting too expensive.

Well my 2 cents, I have 9's, .40's, and .45's. I shoot them all well and would be well served by any of them. However, I shoot my Glock-23 in .40 the best and do not see any difference in my 9's (17/19/26/43) platforms or my old Colts in .45, so I carry the (22/23/27) platforms in .40. Again I shoot the one .40 the best, and see no difference in similar handguns in 9 vs .40 (IMHO).
Which one shoots the best for you?

I actually shoot .45 the best, for whatever reason (1911 platform), but I simply don't like the gun. Next .40, and 9mm I haven't shot enough to actually know how good I am with the round. I guess I'll be finding out in the next few months.

Maybe it was just my area but I will say it appeared that there was more 40 left on the shelf's than any other handgun caliber during the late 2012/2013 crazy panic buying that went on.

Woohoo! More surplus .40s on the market for the folks that like real guns! :): I sold my G19s and am more focused on the .40 and .45 now days. I picked up a G30SF earlier this month and have come to really like it for daily carry. For today though, I'm carrying the G23 again. I found that I could not shoot the G19 as well as the G23 or G27 even. I'm sure it was a training issue, but having a G23 that worked well for me and a couple of G19s that did not, it was easy to just focus on what worked.

Lol, the 1911 is too minimalist for me. I'm American. I want to be wasteful with my bullets, not conserve like I'm traveling the Oregon Trail.

I don't own a .22 pistol and I am not going to buy one any time soon, but your point is not lost on me. The truth is I practice way more with my airsoft pistol than I do with my .45. Not only because shooting airsoft is only a fraction of the cost of even .22, but I can also shoot my airsoft pistol without ever leaving my house. It also helps that I happen to have a room in my house that is 40' long.
Having recently purchased a .22 pistol as my only .22, I should have bought this first. You really don't know what you're missing.

With modern bullets like HST you will close the gap between handgun caliber effectiveness. I do believe that a well placed 45 is slightly better than a 9mm, but the difference is not as significant as you might think. Go with the 9mm and don't look back.

I have both in my Sig P226 (9mm) and P229 (.40) I can shoot both pretty well within 25 yards, I hit everything at that distance. Since the P229 is a bit smaller, that's the one I carry when i carry, so far I never had to pull it out of my IWB hostler. I am not going out of my way to look for a gun fight. Just use my common sense to avoid unsafe area.

Man, I hate to see anybody sell a G19. I've made that mistake about 3 times and now have a Gen 4 that will NEVER be sold. It will be my last gun left standing. I carry a 27 now but soon will be using my 29 for edc. But the 19 is the best 9mm out there and the 9mm is the most popular/available round in the world.

    Is this what you meant?

Recent experience suggest that being the "most popular round in the world" is precisely the reason it may not be the 'most available round in the world' when people get scared....

But its not that hard to put 1,000-2,000 rounds for that rainy day fund which unless you shoot 4 IPSC matches they way they have been going should get you through. (not condoning ammo hording but you get my drift)
