Hey everyone just a quick question about the 454 casull. I know you can shoot the 454 casull round in a gun chambered in this caliber. Now the question are there any other rounds that can be fired fron a gun chambered in 454 casull?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Depends on the brand of firearm. I don't have the money for a Freedom Arms single action but have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. It is my understanding the Freedom Arms owners manual says do NOT shoot 45 Colt out of their 454 Casull unless you have the 45 Colt cylinder. My Ruger says shoot either. I believe it is because of possible erosion of the chamber ahead of the shorter case of the 45 Colt. It could also be that ahead of the shorter case you can get a build up of residue inside the chamber. This can cause problems with ejection of fired 454 cases. This ridge if not cleaned out before shooting the longer carterige can also boost chamber pressure. Since the max pressure for the 454 is 60,000 psi you allready have a lot of pressure. I pretty much have dedicated my Super Redhawk to shooting only 454's since hearing this information. Now if I could only find a good price on a Ruger or S&W in 45 Colt. Jim.

The same holds true for .38/.357 yet it's been done for decades with no I'll effect.
If interchanging ammo was a concern the lawyers for the firearms indusTry would have been all over it years ago with warnings up the ass all over the place.

Proper routine maintenance cures all, shoot on!

With the type of .45 Colt loads used in FA 5-shot revolvers (way beyond "Ruger Only" levels - essentially .454 equivalents), and the tightness of their chambers, their warning is well heeded. Not to mention the accuracy expectations of the owners.

Their revolvers are are truly wonderful to hold. I wish I owned one. If I did, I would have the second cylinder... it's only $300.

Since this thread isn't that old, i just wanted to clear something up.

DO NOT SHOOT 45C AMMO IN YOUR FA 454!!!

The reason is not erosion, it's explosion!

When the bullet leaves the 45c round, it can scrape some lead off before it leaves the .454 chamber. This can cause a ring of lead to build up right at the end of the chamber. When you then cram a 454 round into that ring of lead, you form a seal. The Crimp in the 454 round cannot un-crimp and you have made a bomb! You have powder pushing on the metal bullet which is pushing on the metal casing which is pushing on the metal buildup. Something has to give and sometimes it's the cylinder!

Apparently this isn't a problem in the more generous Ruger cylinders, but in the super tight FA's, it can and HAS caused the cylinder to fail! IT HAS HAPPENED!!!

If I'm not mistaken, the Taurus "Raging Judge Magnum" will chamber and safely fire .45Colt/.454Casull/.410ga

I've sent both .45Colt and .454Casull through my Raging Bull.

I too have a Raging Bull in .454 and have shot .45C out of it. Very fun gun to shoot.

Something else to consider if you're considering a gun in .454 Casull:

A S&W revolver chambered in .460 S&W gives you the option of .460 S&W, .454 Casull, .45 Colt, and .45 Schofield (if you reload for it.

Do any of you guys do any handloading for the Casull? I'm gathering supplied now! $2 per shot, minimun is adding up fast!

I'm starting too. Just purchased a SRH off of here a few weeks ago. Came across factory loaded roumds for $1 a piece (had 100 rounds). I now have plenty of 454 brass.

I have been reloading 454 Casull for about eight years and have a couple loads I like out of my SRH.

    255gr lswc 25.5gr Alliant 2400 about 1450fps

240gr Hornady XTP/MAG with the same powder charge will give about the same velocity.

Disclamer-I did work these loads up from a smaller powder charge and they are good in my SRH, don't know about yours. Several years ago I contacted Hornady and they recommended up to 33gr of 2400 for 1800fps. The most I have went has been 31.5gr of 2400 for about 1650fps and that is a handfull. Hornady also cautioned against using the 250gr XTP because it wont hold up with the Casull pressure. Hope that helps, Jim.
