Your old standards were all new fads at one time. I'm sure plenty old timers were saying "I'll stick my trusty old cap and ball thank you."

Yeah, when we had a fundamental change from cap and ball to cartridges. It took a while to settle on the good supported ones.

But we are getting to the point its just making cartridges, for the sake of making cartridges. Its getting MEME like now..

Just how many of these FAD cartridges have we had show up, make a splash, then zombie on as a small tiny niche.

On the rifle side...

458 SOCOM
6.8mm Remington SPC
6.5 grendel
224 Valkyrie
6mm ARC
6.8 Fury
25-45 Sharps
350 Legend
8.6 blk

Now some have gotten a little traction..
300 Blackout
6.5 Creedmoor

Now we have 21 Sharp?

Pistol wise fewer..

45 gap
30 SC (which is even more hilarious that they completely unknowingly knocked off an old French pistol cartridge)

Its memeable, and its just getting stupid.. Its the Flavor of the Week, but instead of ice cream, its cartridges.

Stick to the standard stuff.. Ammo is expensive as it is without economy of scale.

There isn't a fart in a whirlwinds chance that even Olin Brass (owns the Winchester brand), can take on the megalith that is 22LR though.

I guess what I see is an effort to make a fundamental change from lead rimfire to lead-free. It might not gain traction. I know I'm not jumping in, but I guess I see value in trying. Some stuff sticks, some doesn't.

Then it's little brother came out, same oal as the 22 LR. What was it called? and where is it now?

That was the .17 H2.......just never went anywhere, like into peoples safes or homes. I see the 21 sharp catching on in the greenie states that prohibit lead bullets, but not sure about the rest of us...but then again the first time I saw a CD, I said "No one will want to give up their cassettes"

I don't get it. This appears to offer just about nothing one couldn't get from a .22WMR. My 'predictor' skills a bit lacking, much like MrSmitty's. In 1992, I loaded MS Windows onto a then-modern computer. I spent a day with it and deleted it. "Windows does absolutely nothing I can't do with DOS, and you need a mouse to operate it. This'll never catch on."

17 Hornady Mach II. I have three rifles and a few cases of the ammo. Absolutely best squirrel cartridge out to 75 yds. Makes eyeballs bulge and brain pans empty.

I will probably buy one just to have one, knowing fully that it adds nothing to what I already have. If there are enough suckers like me it might hang on... Or if there is enough support from the California market.

In their day, when Winchester was a real arms company in the USA, they had many great cartridges. The .243 Win, the .270 Win, the 30/30, the .32 Win SPL, the 300 WIN, the .375 Win. Those have stayed around a long time

In the last 25 or so years, whatever foreign company owns the WInchester name keeps coming up with one soon to be an orphan cartridge after another. Maybe some market research would keep them from having egg on their face every time.

I would be afraid to buy the rifle and some ammo, only to have it dry up in a few months. A center-fire like the .340 Weatherby may be hard to find ammo, but can be reloaded. With a rimfire, the last bullet you fire could be the last time you ever shoot the rifle. Like a man that still owns a .41 rimfire derringer

The 17 HM2 (Mach 2) is a neat little round with a 17 grain projectile at 2000 FPS, accurately. Great little squirrel getter out to 75 and 100 yards. I wish it had gained more popularity so that we'd have more ammo options today, but I have it in four different rifle brands and several thousand rounds to last me probably my lifetime.

The CZ rifle below shoots five rounds into .375" groups at 70 yards, consistently.

That said, I don't see myself investing into the new 21 Sharp 22 hotness.

We shoot M2, I bought my thing 2 a stainless fat barrel Chipmonk as his first rifle in 17M2. I did the same years ago with stocking ammo for it.
