You might want to tune back in to reality with how that openly socialist mayor has treated the police and spoke in the media

So, let's see some specific quotes. I've yet to see anything from his detractors that lends any credence to the flap. Warning your biracial child to be careful around NYPD officers is logical, given their record.

I warn my children to be respectful to everyone until such time as they have a reason not to be. Strange how effective that is.

Being respectful alone hasn't helped the many thousands of people who've been racially profiled and harassed by NYPD over the years, phylo. They have a culture of ingrained racism, as has been shown by study after study and is backed up by their own data. They're just pissed because a mayor ran on a platform (and won) of police reform. The people of NYC know what's going on there.

I've been on the receiving end of this type of treatment so forgive me if I refuse to accept it as gospel. As I mentioned earlier, there is a right way and a wrong way to fix things and burning them to the ground is not usually the best way to start. I'm sure there are racist police officers on the NYPD, I'm also sure there are many, many more who aren't. Labeling the entire agency as corrupt, racist or criminal is going to **** off a lot of the officers who don't fit those labels.

Let me get this straight: According to some statistics, 96% of a particular ethnic group who are murdered are murdered by members of their own ethnic group. People, including the police, notice this statistic. So, when attempting to either solve this type of crime, or prevent it, looking at the particular ethnic (and age and sexual) demographic who are known to be the primary cause of this particular anti-social behavior is "racist?" Whatever happened to Occam's Razor - or does that not apply? Whatever happened to common sense? Or does that not apply either when it comes to hurt feelings and a noticeable desire to deflect blame for special scrutiny?

Judging by the data provided by NYPD on their stop and frisk program I'd say there are likely more racists than not, whether they'd admit to or not. And no-one has suggested "burning them to the ground". As far as I have been able to see on the matter the current mayor wants a culture change in the department and a stop to the programs they've been carrying on that have pretty much singled out people of colour for years in NYC. You have to change the whole department when it's as big and ingrained as deeply as it is in NYPD.

And NYC's murder rate is the lowest it's been in 50yrs...hmmm.

When you vote for more government (as folks in NY and NYC continually do), shouldn't you expect more government? Government generally enforces the rules you voted for them to enact. This is not so much a police problem as it is a voters getting what they voted for.

Stop and frisk has been an abject failure for anything but catching people with small amounts of weed. Very few actual felons have been caught, but plenty of peoples Rights have been violated. Guess it makes everything OK. Still waiting for direct quotes from their mayor...

Mayor de Blasio vs. The NYPD: A Short History | MRCTV

"So I've had to worry over the years. Chirlane's had to worry. Is Dante safe each night? There are so many families in this city who feel that each and every night. Is my child safe? And not just from some of the painful realities—crime and violence in some of our neighborhoods—but is safe from the very people they want to have faith in as their protectors.
We’ve had to literally train him, as families have all over this city for decades, in how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police officers who are there to protect him.”

Yeah, I quoted that upthread. Don't see where the butthurt comes from, given NYPD's history and tactics. If this is what has them upset, I'd think they're a little too sensitive to be in police work. Maybe something like daycare worker would be more in line. Teaching biracial or children of colour to be wary of NYPD is just common sense.

I have nothing else to add then.

Because the mayor, announcing to the world that he teaches his children that the police are racist and out to get them, is fine.

    Right?

    Right?

If history bears it out, and it does, as well as NYPD's own data, then it is just fine. Teaching a kid to be careful around potentially volatile people is common sense.

Would teaching my young child to avoid young black males be racist?

Depends on the context. In school...yes. That would likely be racist. Out on the street in a bad neighbourhood...not so much. The mayor also covered that issue with his kids, too, by his own comments. You guys are just choosing to ignore NYPD's history. I get it. You have to circle the wagons.
