I am debating on getting a 17HMR or a 22 magnum rifle for yotes at a hundred yards. For 200yds , its 223 for sure, but at 100 yds I dont know which one to get, just on the fence.? I would like your opinions because I know you guys have actual experience with this. I am going to stay with a CZ rifle , if it matters.

I’ve seen hunts with both. And they both work for the range you want.

Gonna throw my hat in the 22 magnum ring. Just because I’m more confident it would stay together if it hit a hard bone.

For what it’s worth…. I notice a lot more 17 hmr rifles sold than 22 mag at my local shop.

I’m voting .17HMR. At 100y, the retained energy of the .17 is only about 16fpe shy of the .22WMR, but the flatter trajectory and better wind resistance due to the higher velocity means I’d have a better chance of hitting vitals.

I'm in the 17 hmr myself, I shoot a few little 17 centerfire wildcats and I've busted a few out to 130-40 yds in a 17 squirrel with Berger 18 grainers being pushed at 3,600 fps.

223 will kill them just as good at 100 as 200.

A fun, high performance round inside 100 that is not 223 would be the 204 Ruger. It has speed and capable precision in a very low recoiling package. I know the 204 is capable over 100 yards and have personally killed dogs over 100 with it. However, it’s terminal performance (DRT…dead right there) for me is sometimes lacking. Shot placement is everything I understand. That said, for most of my rifle type yote hunts, it’s mainly 223 or a 6mm.

    Ahhhh.
.20 VarTarg if you really wanna go there.
Full disclosure, I've know Kindler for 25 yrs. Dan Cooper introduced us. I'm more of a 19 caliber guy. We have had some awesome conversations over that time period. I had sadds that he didn't sell his shop to someone else.
I have a Cooper in 19 Calhoon and it's looking like I'm gonna get Calhoon to take one of the 700 actions I have and and screw on a 19 Caliber barrel on it and ream it out to a 19 221 or a 19 223.

At 100 yards I would stick with 223. I think you will get a fair bit of runners using either the mag or hmr (and I love and have both calibers).

    Yes.

.17HMR 90 yard brain shot anchored the yote, after a CNS back flip. 7-8 minutes later I finished the still breathing animal with the G19. Couple other 50-75 yard shots were runners that didn't feel like they should have been.

.243 is now the back door gun. One down this year at 135 yards, no drama.

Hoping to switch to .223 after rifle and load testing. I passed on a second yote with the .243 single shot. Might have made the second shot with the AR?
Multi-duty gun at the back door never hurts, right?

With the .204 Ruger I would presume that bullet selection for 'yotes is paramount. To much small varmint explosiveness may not give the desired penetrative on coyote, especially if bone is encountered on entry.
I do know it is hard on steel targets. Speed kills in that case.

Wow! I'll bet the .19/.223 is a screamer. .17 rem with just a bit more diameter. I really like the VarTarg. 15" contender, a bipod and a riflescope with the suppressor it's a hoot.

Have you ever shot any of Todd's bullets?
I've shot some of his Sensational 17's yrs ago. I have, I think two of his loading manuals for the 17 and 20 calibers.
No. Haven't had the time or funds to play that much. Wife is undergoing cancer treatment currently. Radiation starts tomorrow so it may be a while b4 I do.

Not a huge selection to choose from either. Basically 30-40 grain pills. Their speed and precision can be devastating though. Fun to shoot. Essentially no recoil.
