Just got back from vacationing at the Dunes State Park with my girlfriends family and figured I would share my experience with the riverboat up in Michigan City.

My girlfriends dad and I got there at about 11:00 pm last Wednesday evening and I was carrying my XDm 40. We walked in and approached the gate to the casino floor where security was standing. A younger guy told me to step to the side and go through the line. I told him that I first needed to check in a firearm. He looked at me a little weird and told me hesitantly to go to the hallway to security dispatch. Get to that window and told another security officer the same thing, and he made it seem like he deals with it all the time and made no big deal of it.

So I get it checked in into a lock box and he locks it up for me. I asked if I got to keep the key and he said no, they keep it. I didn't want it to be that way, but I knew I was only going to stay for a few. I then go back and get another guy at the casino floor entrance. He then questions me on why I carry a gun, and I told him constitutional right and personal protection. He then starts to say lines like "I don't see why you can carry a gun" and "we don't even like guns at the Blue Chip" and similar statements. I then told him how that was his personal opinion and how it was not similar in any way to mine. He looked pretty upset after I told him I didn't care to listen to his opinions anymore and walked away from the situation after telling him to have a goodnight.

This all lasted about 1 minute right by the front gate and I felt that I was being watched the whole evening, which I know I was by the amount of cameras they have in that place. I would call it a not-so-good experience there, especially for my first time being in a casino, but I walked out with more money than I came in with so it wasn't that bad. ;)

not a bad experience really....I mean, he didn't handle it professionally by bringing his personal opinions into work and discussing them....but other than that it's not like he was violating your rights or yelling at you and trying to throw his weight around or something like that.....I'd say even, not + or -

I wonder how his superior would react if he knew that his employees were harassing his customers on the way in the door?

I don't get this part. Why was the third guy involved? You say you went to "get him"? Was this to complain about their policy of keeping the key?

"Get" was the wrong word. There were two guys originally at the front gate, the young one and the older one. The younger one told me which line to get in and the older one had to check me into the casino itself.

It really wasn't that bad of an experience, just uncomfortable as this was really one of my first times encountering someone "concerned" other than family members, whether it be CC or OC.

There have been a couple of posts about guns/riverboats in the past few weeks...why don't you leave them in the car? The boats don't have a choice in the matter...

Because cars can be broken into and because if you happen to win, do you want to walk out to your car with a pocket full of money and no protection?

You don't leave it in the car for several reasons including the possibility of needing it between the casino and the vehicle. The whole idea of the law that requires casinos to provide lockers for firearms is so people can defend themselves AFTER leaving the casino. Predators are everywhere, and a casino parking lot or garage would seem to be a prime location, especially if you left with winnings in your pocket.

This is exactly why I didn't leave it in the car. By no means did I strike it rich, but if someone is watching me at the cashier cash out, what's to say something won't happen in between there and the car???

Plus, it was not my car and I'm not going to make my girlfriends dad feel responsible if it was stolen.

If you really going to be gambling that much money. or your seriously worried, just valet...I dunno I guess I would rather "gamble" that somebody might break into my trunk and steal my gun, rather than handing it over to a 20 yo making $8/h to keep it secure in a stackon lockbox

Yes, but then again, this is a gun forum and most of us are "worried" to some extent. I would rather have it on my person and not need it than to have it somewhere else and then need it.

With casino security nowadays, there are cameras everywhere and I trust them enough to keep it in lockbox with a camera right on them.

I carry everyday and everywhere I am legally able to. A gun is not going to do me much good away from my person and I would rather be able to keep it closer to me than farther.

Why are the casinos around here so uptight and have people "checking" visitors in, and you can casually stroll right into any casino in Vegas without even seeing security?
I'm not much into gambling, but I have been in several casinos in Indiana, and a few in Missouri, and they all have security gates you must enter through. But in Vegas, I never saw anybody watching the entrance. It would seem that they know how to do it right in Vegas, as I know their security "sees" everything that happens on the floor. Thread jack over.

If the firearm comes up missing, I would rather have the Casino pay for the loss than my insurance company, minus the deductible. The security at these casinos is higher than you can imagine. No one has even mentioned all the undercover Indiana Gaming Agents roaming around, plus the normal casino security personell and cameras. I'll take my chances with the casino securing my firearm so I can have it with me when I return to my vehicle.
