I'm currently in the market for an AK 47 and was lost when I started looking. There were Century, Saiga, Arsenal, and to add to it you could buy an old one disassembled and imported. I want one to shoot on a regular basis at the range and I wanna add a few things to it, maybe grip and red dot, 6 pos. stock ect or see if I could buy the rifle stock pretty close. Where would be the best place to buy from and what product etc..? Your advice and imput would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't give your location but up north in Mishawaka, IN at Midwest Gun Exchange they have many Arsenal configurations available. From the standard config to the tacticool model.

Saiga is the way to go, if you don't feel comfortable converting one yourself, you can by a converted one for under $600 and buy all of the custom stuff yourself. Arsenal = overpriced IMO.

A question occurs to me: are there parts kits available that would allow me to build one with a sheet metal receiver? I have all the sheet metal working equipment and could make a lower from a blank sheet with a print. I wonder because there have been PSL kits off and on which required only a receiver. An AK with no identity would be awesome.

A WASR is going to be the easiest and best buy for the money involved, but there are some things to look at/for when selecting one. Canted front sight block and mag wobble are the most prominent things to beware of, but neither will affect the function and both are easily fixed.

I have a Yugo U/F which I consider to be an excellent AK for the money. I'm always surprised how nice the finish is on it and it has been reliable as all get out...

I think it's a great mid level compromise.

WASR best deal for your money
no in my oppion for the price you can convert a Russian built saiga... if they where still $350 like when i bought mine 2 years ago i would agree but not now they are averaging 500-550 now

Saiga is the way to go, if you don't feel comfortable converting one yourself, you can by a converted one for under $600 and buy all of the custom stuff yourself. Arsenal = overpriced IMO.
    +1 this!

see first comment and no mag wobble is not easily corrected the lack of dimpling on the receiver means the mag will never fit like a real ak and will always have side to side flop..... however wider mags (like most yugo's) will help the matter some as they are tighter fitting but most surplus mags will have extreme flop and unless your going to weld a shim or dimple the receiver like a ak is supposed to be you will always have problems with excessive play

You really need to define "best" a bit more.

Certainly a WASR is one of the best values for money, a VEPR the best for accuracy, the Arsenals best for features.

Etc etc. what are you looking to do with your new AK?

I'm also a little curious how you can easily fix a WASR's mag wobble, short of hot gluing a shim on the inside of the receiver :D
Its easy dont buy a Wasr to start with Problem avoided:D:D:D:D:D

And paying $550 for a wasr and calling it a good value makes me think your out of your mind pay 100 more and get a real ak not century's abomination

For cheap the WASR will work, but its not pretty. The VZ58 is pretty sweet, but it does have the mag issue. The next step would be a Saiga or and Arsenal, but to me paying $800 for an AK is just crazy.

Check the used market too you can find MAK90's for about $600 and even SAR-1's for that price.
