However much I may agree with the assessment, Godwin's Law still applies.
Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaI won't google it...enlighten me.
There are many corollaries to Godwin's law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself)[3] than others.[1] For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress. This principle itself is frequently referred to as Godwin's law.

I understand the sentiment, but still disagree. Hitler is a cliche. He's overused by anyone with even a slightly (or even non-) legitimate comparison, and it's become a tired shtick. It's a "guilt by association" form of ad hominem, and if the only objection we can make against a person or idea is "b-b-b-bu-but... HITLER!", then perhaps we need to spend some time working on some real arguments.I don't think Godwin's law applies if the comparison is legitimate.

I wouldn't compare Obama, as much as I despise him, with people who are directly responsible for the murders of millions of innocent people. It isn't fair, and is in fact belittling of what those people did, and an insult to what the survivors of those genocides went through.
