The more I'm starting to like it.

I work 4pm - 2:30 am Monday - Thursday. I leave for work at 2:30 before my daughter gets off the bus. I get home after 3 am and get to bed around 4. I then get up at 7:15 am for about 15 minutes to get my daughter on the bus and go back to bed for a few more hours and start it all over again. I get to call her at night to tuck her in bed while she's begging me to be home for her. I keep this job to keep a roof over our head and food on the table and pay taxes to keep a roof over the heads and food on the tables of those who don't want to work.

I could just stay home and be with my daughter every evening and let everyone else who works pay my bills. Anybody else about to say f it and go Galt? Damn that thing called self pride that won't allow me to be a welfare queen.

Going Galt is ALL ABOUT self pride and working only for yourself.

I've done it but admit to doing it for other reasons. I sold my business and retired. I admit that dealing with regulations and rules was a huge PITA but it was a family health issue that really caused me to retire. I still have a few cigar shops, those were unrelated to my business and they are really just allowing me to have my hobby as a later life career.

But I now work for my own satisfaction and money. That is the essence of going Galt. I've dramatically altered my life, the government has lost out on literally millions of tax dollars that I paid each year between myself and my company. Screw the government, they can't make me be a producer. The more barriers they throw up to hurt producers the more producers will cut back. Oh some will work around the barriers set up by government looters, but eventually they will say screw it and walk away. Let the bureaucrats try to start a company, let them try to run a business, let them try to create jobs. Just not going to happen. They need us. But at 49 years old I have retired. I work when I want, do what I please, and see no need to help the RINOs or the DEMs destroy this nation.

So I'd rather withdraw my consent. I'd rather take back my production. I'd rather hasten the fall so that we can start over again when they realize they need us to innovate and produce. But they can not force us to innovate. They cannot force us to hire. They cannot force us to produce. Eventually they will realize that.

They say pride comes before a fall. Fair enough, but your story reminds me that people with no pride at all will fall as well. I do what I do for the same reason as you- I want my kid to learn that a little pride in one's self is a good thing.

I have kind of been doing the same thing only I have focused on "quality of life" concerns more than just taking it easy. For that reason I am self employed in a profession that pays well but I can also operate from my home. I have concentrated on lowering my monthly expenses by paying off and getting rid of "stuff". I have also chosen to home school my son which again is focusing on those things I value like family, faith and friends.

I could make twice as much money if I sent my son back to public school and just concentrated on my business but I don't like the trade offs. Plus I would pay so much more in taxes the payoff isn't that great. Especially when I compare it to the loss of time with my son and making him suffer through the idiotic PC things he would see there it makes my decision rather easy.

Sadly the last statement is not true. They (liberals) never learn this lesson. They play with a "changing" rule book and alway point the blame on someone/thing. Even in the end on their death bed you (the working joe) and Mr. Bush will be the ones to blame for everything that went bad.

The idea of 'going Galt' has always rung hollow for me. It is worse now, because the political climate in the US has resulted in an influx of people discovering or rediscovering Randian philosophy. But I've always looked at producers like serpent's teeth. If one drops out there are hundreds more to take his place. Apart from a tiny handful of people over the course of history I don't believe society would be set back by the absence of any particular individual contribution. And I don't believe enough producers could be organized to have an impact in the aggregate, since there will always be another nickel to be made by staying in, even if the State takes 95 cents.

I think the basic idea of it has been lost as well. More Fight Club and less Wild Hogs. Just getting those references means you don't qualify.

I could be wrong about it. Short of Einstein, Ford, Curie, Galileo, Deere, Wozniak, Gutenberg...folks like that, who is contributing what that would not be quickly replaced if the producer dropped out?

You just haven't recieved the lastest letter, you will get to see your daughter even more with the new plan. All able bodied people above the age of 6 will be needed to support the new program... she'll be going to work with you now.

What prompted this thread for me was the Utah eminent domain thread. It seems as though we have people who think they are entitled to the use of parks on other peoples dime. I am working hard to put up a house in my 17 acres of woods that I paid an inflated price for because freeloaders want the state to artificially limit the supply of wooded land.

Hell, it would be easier to stay at home and let somebody else pay my rent, buy my groceries, and pay for my recreation.

Don't get me wrong. I thank God that I have my job and it is by HIS grace that I have what I have. I took this job 11 years ago and didn't want it at the time. After being there a year or so, they had a layoff and I got bumped to second shift and was mad at the world. I tried to get on at different factories and it seemed every door was getting shut in my face. The other factories laid people off shortly after and I most certainly would have been one of them if I did get on there.

I got bumped to 2nd shift because I wasn't a certified welder. I got certified and they had another layoff shortly after. Guess what. All non certified welders got laid off so I dodged a bullet there. My attitude quickly changed after that and became a "company" man. During that time, my daughter was born and spent 11 days in NICU and cost tens of thousands of dollars. My employer could have easily laid me off and saved money on my hospital bills for her.

I then got into maintenance. The last time they laid people off, they took every single person below me in seniority and I got bumped to second shift again. If I were still laboring, I'd be laid off because they got laborers with more seniority than me.

Again, I thank God for providing the opportunities I've had at work to stay there. If I merely just showed up and punched the clock and stayed comfortable where I was at, I'd be laid off. But God gave me the drive to improve my situation so I'm where I'm at.

I have self pride but I constantly try to remind myself that it is the Big Man up above that has blessed me with opportunity. I just need to take him up on it.

My grandfather told me several times, success is where opportunity and preparation meet. Sounds like you've been doing you part (preparation) and the good lord has been doing his (opportunity)!

Just because you have NO interest in traveling the Country and seeing nature's beauty in more places than just your own property doesn't mean others do

Listen guys, hornady here believes that NO ONE has the right to explore our Nation's forests and wonders like the Grand Canyon. He believes that one person should own what is now our parks and that if they destroy those parks in the name of progress, OH WELL. He doesn't care.

True, the federal Government has no right to own park land. However, state's have that right, but he doesn't think so. Yet, I'm the bad guy cause I want to preserve our parks and allow all of us to visit, explore, and learn.

Guess we should just level the entire park system and sell it off piece by piece, huh? Who cares, right? Well I do. And I'm sure the rest of us do too.

No, Hornady is tired of sacrificing his time away from family working so others can sit on their butts and live off of welfare and food stamps.

I think I'll buy the grand canyon and bulldoze it shut so I can plant corn on it.:n00b:

Overheard recently at my step-daughter's elementary school:

Young Girl: "Mommy, why do I have to do well in school?"
Mother: "So that when you grow up you can get a good job and be a tax slave for the loser kids who didn't do sh*% in school."
