Lot of stuff happens on YouTube. It's a major platform for sharing all sorts of media.
This thread isn't really for sharing YouTube videos, but moreso to discuss the happenings at YouTube, the decisions they make, the community, the big YouTube dramas, the demonitization issues, the 1A/2A controversies, etc.
I'll lead this off with a couple recent occurrences.
The Logan Paul Situation
Logan Paul is a dip****. This guy is a general clickbait ******* with millions of followers. He has a "shock" shtick, a "look what I'm doing" sort of thing... he's highly disrespectful to other cultures (as you'll see in a moment), and that's just the type of person he is.
About two weeks ago, during a series of videos of Logan visiting Japan, he entered the famous Aokigahara "Suicide Forest" while recording a video. There, he found what you'd expect... a hanging (hung?) body in a tree. They filmed it, they made jokes about the dead person, and they published it to YouTube. This video actually reached YouTube's trending section.
Immediately, the backlash to this video was immense. Huge names spoke out against Logan, the 22 year old dip****.
Aaron Paul: How dare you! You disgust me. I can't believe that so many young people look up to you. So sad. Hopefully this latest video woke them up. You are pure trash. Plain and simple. Suicide is not a joke. Go rot in hell.
Sophie Turner: You’re an idiot. You’re not raising awareness. You’re mocking. I can’t believe how self-praising your “apology” is. You don’t deserve the success (views) you have. I pray to God you never have to experience anything like that man did.
PewDiePie did a few videos discussing the subject, especially touching on the monitization and clickbait aspects of it. It's good to hear some input on it from another YouTuber that understand how these things work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFmSepfF48o
Logan issued an apology.
Nearly two weeks later, YouTube decided to remove Logan Paul from YT's top-tier of ad revenue, as well as put his YouTube Red projects "on-hold".
YouTube Limits Relationship With Logan Paul After His Video Depicting Dead Body
A tangentially-related situation that I don't have a ton of detail on... Another YouTuber, Shane Dawson, was accused of being a pedophile when a video was made splicing some of his comments in a podcast together to sound bad.
Turns out the person who made the fake pedophile video emailed Shane to let him know that someone in Hollywood paid them to make it, and they posted receipts and the name of the person they received the money from, which is Jeffrey Oscar Levin. Which is the name of Logan Paul's manager. Not sure what to make of that right now, but if it develops, you'll find it here.
Dave Rubin
Another situation going on right now is Dave Rubin's channel is having problems with monetization. Dave Rubin is a political commentator, satirist and talk show host. His interviews are pretty great, and I suggest checking them out at his channel The Rubin Report
Tucker Carlson Interviews Dave Rubin About "Ominous" Google De-Monetizing YouTube Videos
It seems that, very shortly after Dave publishes a video, it gets demonetized. The way they are being demonetized doesn't seem to be from spam-reports or user abuse... but it seems to be a manual process, a decision made by someone at YouTube. It also doesn't make a lot of sense, because Dave's videos are very professional, and not controversial enough to be considered poor content.
