I recently ordered and received a new CSM instructor’s belt from the Wilderness, which is the version with the polymer insert to make the belt stiffer. I already own two of these belts, but both of them are about five inches too big for me now, so I needed a new belt.

The problem is that the new belt is nowhere near as stiff and sturdy as my first two. It’s noticeably lighter in weight and not as thick as the first two. I wore both ofthem daily for years (in succession) and although they’re a little frayed on the surface, both of them are just as sturdy and supportive as when they were new. They’re just too big.

The new belt is downright flimsy by comparison. I can twist and bend it easily, and I don’t believe it’s going to be adequate tosupport all of the gear I carry. As manyof you know, I’m a big, squishy guy who carries a lot of stuff on his belt. I’m as hard on a belt as probably anyone else on the planet, yet my two original Wilderness belts are still going strong.

I sent email to the Wilderness about it (three times). I explained that the new belt is very flexible and nowhere near as stiff and sturdy as my other two belts. Iasked if it were possible that they sent a belt without the polymer insert orif they had changed the way they’re making the belts. I didn’t get a response in a few days, so I called them yesterday. The first thing the woman who answered said was that they’d received my email. I choked-back my “So why didn’t you acknowledge it or respond?” in order to get better results. After discussing the belt, she was unwillingto believe that it was possible that they had shipped a belt without the polymer insert since it had been “checked twice.” She did not address whether or not they have changed how the belts are made. She said they’d have to see the belt before making any decisions, so she agreed to send a shipping label to return the belt.

So . . . for those of you who have been long time customers of the Wilderness as have I, have any of you noticed a difference in the construction or stiffness of the belts over time, especially if you use the CSM version? If it’s just a matter of them sending me a belt without the insert, this problem goes away. If what they sent me is the best they can do, however, I have a big problem. The belt they sent to me isn’t going to be adequate for my needs.

I am betting shipping error. I have not got a csm as I find them too stiff for my needs but have looked at them fairly recently and noticed the same stiffness as in the past. Keep us updated as this could be indicative of a troubling recent change.

My most recent belt is 3 years old. Very stiff and seems to be the same as older belts.

Can't you have your existing belts modified for your new profile?

I'm had 4 belts from them over the past 5 or 6 years, all but one had the plastic insert. I got my most recent early this year. It's the 1.5 inch lined money belt with the titanium buckle. It's just as stiff and well built as the first one I got. The zipper makes holster selection fun. Not only do I have to make sure the slot in the holster is long enough, it needs to be wider than normal so the zipper will fit through. Even with that it's still the best belt I've ever used.

It sounds like you got a bad belt. Let us know what they say when it's all over.

    Thank you, I shall!

According to their website, no. I'm sure it's possible but I don't think they will do it. They will give you a little discount if you recycle your buckle.

Can I wear them? As a watchband?

You may be right and I'll keep you all posted. The Wilderness has been the Cadillac of gun belts for a long, long time. Let's hope this gets fixed!

Maybe you received the 3-stitch instead of the 5-stitch belt. :dunno:

Maybe the ones you've had for a while are stiffer because of all that Viagra you take has seeped into them. Perhaps after you've worn the one that isn't as stiff for a while, the same thing will happen to it, as well.

It's neither of those. It's the "CSM," which is supposed to have a polymer insert between the two layers of nylon.

I was comparing to my older belts again this evening. I can kind of see where the material on the belt bulges a little like there is an insert between the two layers. I think the real difference is that the nylon material is thinner and/or less stiff than what they used on my previous two belts. If that's the case, I don't know what to make of it. I may need to find a different belt maker again.

For what it's worth, the new belt is is the coyote color, where as both of my previous belts are the OD.

Since I have two, I am considering shipping one of the old belts back to them with the new belt so that they can see the difference for themselves. I'll include a check for return postage and instructions to return it.

If you decide that a switch is in order, I'll throw my vote in for the Ares Gear belts. Last I checked there was a bit of a lead time issue but worth the wait. Well made, stiff as you need it, and "somewhat stylish"

Do those companies make them in sizes for the large, squishy types like me?

Belt is going back today with their return shipping label. If they simply forgot to put the liner it in it, problem solved. If not, then . . . not so much.

Okay, I put the belt with a letter explaining my situation into the UPS system on Thursday evening. They should have received it by now, but no word at all from the Wilderness yet. Since they did not respond to my initial emails until I called them, I'm not expecting stellar communication this time either.

Let us know what they say and how they treat you. I've bought 3 belts from them in the past and been happy so far. If the quality and service have changed I may try something else in the future.

    Will do.

Still no email or call as of 1829 HR on 24 JULY 2013.

I predict (and really hope that I'm wrong) that I'll see a credit on my credit card account as a refund and I won't hear anything else from them. Again, that's my gut feeling and I hope I am wrong.

Still no contact as of 01 AUGUST 2013 at 1950 HR.

    I sent another email yesterday.

I'm beginning to think they don't care whether or not I am their customer.

Did you ever check out Comp-TAC's belts?

Yeah, they don't make 'em in my size. Thanks for the pointer, though! I appreciate the help.

Based on recommendations in another topic, I went to the Daltech Force site and ordered a Bio belt. It may be perfect or not, but at least I'll have a belt to wear while I am resolving the issue with the Wilderness.
