CAMDEN – The Battleship New Jersey has launched an auction for the right to fire the ship’s 5-inch gun at the end of the fireworks display over the Delaware River on July 3rd.

“A lucky guest will literally pull the trigger and fire the 5-inch gun to end this year’s fireworks show,” said CEO Jim Schuck. “This is the same gun that was used effectively throughout the history of the USS New Jersey – from World War II to the Persian Gulf War – hitting targets up to 10 miles away. But not to fear, we are only shooting blanks! But they are loud and make a great flash!”

Yeah, but your 8 miles is in a circle. The New Jersey's guns' 10 miles is in a straight line. Well, straight-ish.

When I was in jr. high I had the opportunity to go out for several hours on the USS New Jersey off the coast of California. During the excursion they fired off the 5 inchers and the Phalanx guns. Most awesome thing I have ever seen.

Back in my war, the New Jersey was off shore of our air base by several miles when it got a mission to fire. The base sirens went off thinking that there were incoming rockets. Nope, it was the concussion from 16 inch guns, and the muzzle flash could be seen for miles. The kicker was that no one knew she was out there, scared the be jesus out of everybody, and hoping there wasn't to be any short rounds.

When I started collecting WW2 guns (not really a gun family) I asked my dad what types of rifles he trained on in the Navy. He replied: as a sonar operator I humbly admit my job did not include a lot of weapons, but as a Navy man I can say we didn't have much use for anything with less than a 5 inch bore.:D

Every week underway we held a PAC-fire when we tested the 5 inch gun and the CIWS systems. First couple of times was cool, but when I wasnt at the console I was in my rack trying to sleep...and you could NOT get any sleep with the 5 inch gun shaking the entire ship.

Screw the the little toy gun on the Jersey, I want to play with the big boy toy and lob some shells that's the weight of a VW 25 miles down range.

One of my GQ stations on my 2nd ship(DD) was the space right under the muzzle of Mount 5-2 with a RAM launcher aft of it and Sea Sparrow launcher fore of it. The RAM and RIM-7 were very loud but that 5"54 made us feel Like we were inside a base drum.
