And we thought the NSA was bad in the way they spied on us.

Microsoft must be a new branch of the federal government if they do this. Just like the gov force new style TVs, told us what light bulbs we can use, how many gallons our toilets can use, now we have Microsoft telling us that if you like your operating system... we lied!

Bastiges. I'll have to move up total migration off windoze; I was hoping to walk it through in a few months as I found time. Now they're wasting my time and effort even though I'm not going to be using their crapware anymore. I resent this. WTF is the matter with having a box and doing what you do with it, without these scrotumnecks attacking it and forcing you to waste time over and over just to keep it working? Let's see, I have a 15 year old laptop that hasn't been rebooted for about 10 years except at power faults, and it still just does what it always has.

I have 2 identical boxes. I have done the "upgrade" (not) on one. I will keep the other with 7 on it. Thanks for the warning! Time to firewall that second box.

Windows 7: go to administrative tools>services>windows update>properties>start up type>disabled or manual
    Windows 8.1: swipe right frame>search 'services'>windows update>properties>start up type>disabled or manual

This way it will not update anything or you can manually select certain updates. i.e. KBxxxxxxxx.

Check these precursor to windows 10 updates and remove them one by one: go to control panel>programs and features>view installed updates>search these updates below and uninstall them

If you want to avoid upgrading a machine to Win10, check out this page which covers all of the telemetry, upgrade prompts, etc. that have been installed in Win7/8.

Nice resource, thanks. I've still got the nag icon on my HTPC even though I have updates disabled . . . need to nuke those suckers so I don't lose Windows Media Center.

For Win7, you can also go to Control Panel > Windows Updates > Click the link for Change Settings > Under Important Updates, choose "Download updates but let me choose when to install them" and make sure there is a check mark in the box next to Give me recommended updates the same...

Using that method, you don't have to manually start the search and download process, as the updates will download automagically and you can then just select the ones you want to install and avoid the ones you don't want to install.

Thanks for the KB articles to uninstall :)
