Need some help on a Winchester 1890. It's a Model 2 in 22 Long Standard Model. That's about all I know. How to determine year? Google was no help other than sites that charge you and they may have info.

It is a repeater, octagon barrel with thumb screw for take down. The "pump" action is 12 groove and has serial on tang only. Serial 152xxx.

Any idea what year? Value range (not that it matters)? Any history other than what Google provided? Can you use 22LR?

It might be helpful to post a pic.

I had a pump 22 when I was a kid.... I wish I had never gotten rid of it. It was (and still is) one of my favorite shooters.

    Enjoy it!

Not the actual gun, but appears to be the same make/model

They are different. It's been a while, but I think a Long is a LR case with a Short bullet. I haven't actually tried putting one in, yet. I have plenty of 22LR here, but haven't seen a 22L in about 2 decades.

Serial 152xxx is the year 1902. Records on serial numbers for the years 1890 through 1907 are not complete on the 1890 models, and the records only indicate the last serial number issued for that particular year. The last serial number issued for 1901 is 127181 and the last serial number issued for 1902 was 154985. I have been collecting Winchester 22 cal pumps for over 30 years and have a few in my collection.

    Strange. The barrel has different patent dates-June 26, 88-Dec 6, 92-Nov 27, 06-May 30, 1911 Model 90 22Long

Possible that barrel was swapped? The trigger group is definitely Winchester Model 1890 Pate June 26, 88- Dec 6, 92

Why would the barrel have 2 additional patent dates compared to trigger group? And why would the barrel have a patent date of 1911 if the gun is 1902?

Strange and just looking for background from the masters.

Edit. Appears that Model 90 replaced the 1890 but shared parts. Looks like this may be a barrel/action change from 1911'ish on a 1902 rifle. If you agree/disagree let me know.

This is very possible. The 1890 models were considered very inexpensive at their time and close to a million (actually around 850,000) were manufactured. Many of the 1890 models were used as gallery guns (they were the most popular .22 cal model in shooting galleries) and were shot so much that the barrels had to be replaced over time.

All of the Winchester pump 22's are excellent little guns. Very well made and accurate. Wish I had a few back that I sold off.

If it is labeled for 22 Long the chamber may not be deep enough for the additional length of the 22 Long Rifle cartridge

I have one in .22 WRF. There are three types of receivers, but I can't recall all the details from memory. Fun guns to shoot.
