When we first moved the the US I did not carry a handgun. It was more out of lacking of knowledge than anything else. I didn't know how to go about getting a permit.

I had owned several different types of guns in Canada including a handgun but I could not carry one. It was strictly for the range.

I remember very clearly what spawned my desire to get a gun very rapidly. We were in North Dakota on our way to Montana and I had stopped for gas and a potty break.

My wife went inside to use the restroom and my son and I were filling up the car with gas and washing the windows. I do have to admit I was being stupid as I had left my wallet on my trunk in plain view. Although we were the only ones at the station at right then I should have been smarter than that.

While we were pumping an old rusty Ford Bronco pulled up and two very rough looking individuals got out. If you have ever been around very bad men there seems to be an aura around them that sets off warning signals. I put my wallet in my back pocket very quickly.

The driver walked right by me and stood inside the gas station the other guy walked up to me and told me they were heading to the next state and were out of gas. He asked me for $20.

There was no way I was pulling out my wallet, so I told him I was paying with my credit card. (which I was). He moved off about 30 feet and stood in the parking lot. I was praying my wife would hurry up and get out of the restroom. I didn't want to send my son inside as it would be cornering him in with the other guy and i didn't want to leave him alone out in the parking lot. And there was no way we were all going in the store.

As my wife came outside I was finishing up with the gas. I told her to get in the car. As I got in my car a lady pulled into the gas station. The guy who had me for money walked up to her. She kept her window up and when he asked her she must have felt what I felt because she took off.

We were about to leave when I saw the other guy still inside the store just waiting. Then I noticed the clerk, he had to be around 17, I thought of my kids and decided I couldn't leave. I pulled my car around the side of the store, pulled out my credit card and told my wife. "I think I am going to get shot, but I can't leave that kid in there alone."

I walked into the store and the first thing I noticed was that you could have cut the tension in the air with a knife. I asked the clerk if I could buy sodas with my credit card. I walked past the other guy, turned my back on him feigning to look at the pops and waited for the bullet to hit my spinal column. There was nothing else I could do. They had not threatened anybody. I had no weapon, not even a can of pepper spray if something did go down.

After about 5 minutes I heard the door open and I turned around they guy left the store. I turned to the clerk and asked him if he was alright. He looked like he was about to cry. He said "They were waiting for you to leave, I thought I was going to die." I asked him if he had a gun or had said anything. The kid told me the guy had walked into the store and just waited there saying nothing but looking at him. The kid had obviously felt what the lady and I had felt. I told him to call 911 and I did the same thing.

As I spoke to the dispatcher and gave the description of the two guys and the vehicle you could here chatter in the background. The dispatcher asked me if I knew where they went. I said no just the general direction. She asked me to see if i could see them on the road but to be cautious. When I looked outside then around the opposite corner to my car I saw their Bronco on the other side of the street at a hole in the wall Casino.

As I told her where their vehicle was she asked me if I could here anything. I said "What do you mean?" Apparently from the description I had given and the kid had given and the vehicle we had told them they were driving they matched the description of two escaped felons who were listed as armed and dangerous.

All of a sudden you could here sirens coming from all directions. Right then and there I wanted to hug my wife and son and thank God for keeping us all safe.

As soon as I got home to Indiana I started researching what I needed to do to legally buy and carry a gun. A friend gave me my first gun as a gift it was a S&W 422. I traded that to another guy for a NIB S&W 915 for an even trade.

I got my carry permit within a week and I have carried every since. I do not ever want to have to shoot anybody. I am a Missionary and I am here to help people not hurt them. But my stronger desire is to keep my family safe and never be put into that situation again where I am totally helpless and unable to keep my family from harm.

Kudos to you for coming to the aid of the young man. That was a gutsy thing to do.

After the 2008 election, and watching what was happening to this country, I decided it was past time to start going armed. I have thought about doing it for some time....but being 6'5", 300 lbs, most folks choose not to mess with me. But I am getting older, and not as spry as I once was. So this past spring I took the plunge. And I am very glad I did, having had one nearly "bad" encounter right here in Lafayette this past fall that I won't discuss because of my name in this forum.

Now I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. My brother is soon moving to Indiana from Missouri, he is planning on getting his LTCH, his wife is already here, she started her new job this week.

Wow very interesting. Stories like this is what got me started carrying. I live downtown Indy and hear gun shots a lot! So, I feel its always necessary. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

If I lived in downtown Indy, I think I would want more firepower than a handgun. ;)

You must be related to mrortega. You guys are just a bunch of cowboys out looking for an excuse to get in the middle of a situation. You should just mind your own business. Once your family was safe you should have left. It would have been the clerks own fault if he got shot for not carrying a gun himself.

^^The above is sarcasm. However, judging from some of the comments elsewhere on this site, I'm sure someone will come along shortly and say the same thing and be 100% serious about it. Good for you for doing the hard thing and helping someone else out.

I was going to say Epic Fail for putting yourself and your family back in such a dangerous situation when you had your way out, and with no means to defend yourself. But you did help a guy out it seems...So I'm on the fence on this one(ouch).

Thanks for sharing, it took my wife a while to accept the idea that I was going to carry. Soon she will become efficient with a pistol, then I hope to get her carrying.

Jgreiner, I was the same as you... 6'7" 365# didn't really worry about it to much... I kind of woke up last spring... realized I'm getting older, health isn't the greatest (my own fault!) and I really didn't want to end up in a brawl on the ground or a knife in the gut, or shot trying to protect my daughters and wife!

Be thankful that your presense was enough...because evil would have triumphed since you had the ability to "do nothing".

You are one lucky dude. :rockwoot:

Hah- well said. We had a good man on the scene, but he was limited in his ability to do something!
