Who builds custom M1 Garands in NW Indiana?

Hello, all!

A couple of years ago I was out at the Jasper Pulaski Shooting Range and saw a couple of older fellas who were shooting a custom M1 with a laminated stock. They apparently worked at a shop that specialized in building M1 Garands off of USGI receivers. They gave me a card, but I have since misplaced it.

Anyone know who these guys might have been or what shop they might have worked out of? I am looking to have an M1 built and they had exactly what I am now looking to buy.

Not NWI but this guy is one of the best guys around that does custom work to Garands. He is up in Michigan but takes on work through the mail.

There is a guy name Kurt, I believe, that hangs at JP DNR. I may have a card I got years ago somewhere in the house. I will keep an eye out.

I am going to stop by JP tomorrow morning and ask the range master if he knows those guys. I will throw out the name Kurt if the range master is having any trouble recalling and see if that helps refresh his memory!

I would only trust Jerry Johnson to build my Garand at this time. Everybody that he learned the craft from, has passed on.

If you can't find your guy, I'd start with Mark Penrod of Penrod Precision in North Manchester. Believe his number is 260-982-8385. If he can't help, he'll know who can.

Called and spoke with Mr. Jerry Johnson

Also, I spoke with one of the range masters over at JP this morning and he said he regularly shoots with the guys and would pass on my card to them.

According to Mr. Johnson, it seems like the CMP Service Grade Special is the one for me. He said that parts are now so outrageously expensive that you would be better off getting something already built and work from there. Otherwise, you would be spending huge money to have one built from scratch. Great guy and VERY knowledgeable about the M1 Garand!!

I will definitely be giving Mr. Jerry Johnson a call if I ever need work done on my Garand.
