That is not a "key" hole. That is a "Hillary Hole" and it dates back to when Smith & Wesson caved into the Clinton Administration's anti-gun demands. Many of us older folks boycotted Smith & Wesson back then and the company actually ended up changing management and ownership.
I'm pretty sure that all the newer S&W revolvers no longer include the infamous "Hillary Hole"
The only newer S&W I'm tempted to buy at this point is the 640 Pro. I haven't seen them all, but the ones that I have seen none of them have the internal lock (Hate those MFs).
All my S&W revolvers are working guns no safe queens. I don't have a problem with the IL, I don't care about the looks that much and I can't see that hole when I'm shooting the gun anyway. I have removed the lock on one of my competition guns because I cut the hammer down and flag had nothing to hold it in place. I have heard all the errornet stories about them failing and gun not firing. Well ANYTHING can fail, even pre-lock S&W revolvers can fail.
The odds of having to use a gun to defend yourself and the internal lock malfunctioning are WAY less than than your car malfunctioning and causing you to get in a accident and yet people still buy and drive cars.
As for S&W selling out and putting the locks in to please the GOV. I would rather have S&W's with the lock than no S&W's at all, which could have been the outcome if they had not put the locks in.
If you don't like the lock and won't buy one with the lock, No problem that leave more for the rest of us.
I've heard RUMORS that S&W was doing away with the lock but I have not seen ANY NEW K,L,N frames without the lock, even the 4 screw classic remake has the IL. As I said before a few(not all) of the J frames dont have locks. S&W website still shows IL on all the K,L,N frames.
But I hope you guys are right and this will make the IL guns collector items.
