I am in the market for some new earmuffs. I am going to be taking some training classes in the spring, and my el cheapo muffs aren't going to work. I need to be able to hear the instruction, etc.

I'm looking for some low profile muffs that won't get in the way when shooting rifles. I don't want to spend $200, but I am not opposed to spending some money to get quality.

    Thanks.

I use the bright red ones that Harbor Freight sells for $3.00 a set. They have a set a little bit nicer for about $5.00 as well.

If I'm shooting next to some guy with a cannon, I put the foam plugs in my ear holes, and then the muffs. Works great....can't hear anyone cussing you out at the range.

    Howard Leight | Impact Sport

Howard Leight Impact Sport. Light Weight, Low profile, Fold into compact package. I have used them for over a year and still on the original batteries. Easy to open battery compartment. Easy to hear range commands and conversation. Best part they are not expensive.

Usually around $59.95 but have seen them $49.95 on sale sometimes. Gander Mountain sells the exact same muff with their logo for around $79.95.

I wear a set of Westone custom molded musicians ear plugs with variable attenuation.

Kinda like these but no pretty colors:
    Musicians - Style 49 | Westone

I have solid attenuators that give about 40 dBA attenuation. Not sure they still have the type I have. They were from my days when I worked in audio R&D (about 10 years ago). I think you can only get them through a doctor's office, like a hearing specialist, or maybe a hearing aid place (Miracle Ear stores?). They're pricey, $200-300 depending on the doctor, but work very well and super comfortable. I can wear them for hours since they are molded to my ears and can change out to several different types of passive attenuators that I have.

If it's really busy at the range or I'm shooting something really loud, I'll put a pair of cheap muffs over while wearing the plugs with a lower attenuator.

+1 on the Howard Leight. Had mine for about a year now. They work good. I like being able to hear what's going on around me. I got mine from Midway they were $50. I would love to have the digital hearing aid type ones that are fitted to your inner ear, but haven't ponied up the $1000 bucks for them yet. Maybe when these wear out.

+2 on the Howard Leight muffs. Have had mine for 1.5 years now and still going strong. I found mine online at Amazon for $49 and I got free shipping (Amazon Prime Member). I tried out some Peltors on a recent trip down to SC and I like these just as well for less money. YMMV.

I use some cheap foam earplugs that are linked by a plastic cord. They are free at work, and actually do a very good job cutting out the high frequency / high DB stuff that guns produce, and don't completely block out all voices. I used them very effectively last year at a carbine training course.

    I use them because;

    a) They are free and unlimited at work (mandatory PPE on the shop floor)
    b) They are very compact and don't interfer with cheek weld
    c) I can keep an extra set in the butstock or pistol grip of many of my rifles.

While they aren't as good as good muffs, they certainly do the trick.

I use MSA Sordin's. I love the high quality sound reproduction, the comfort, and the excellent build quality.

They are quite expensive, but to me, they're worth the extra money.

I use these, as well. I like the fact that I can actually hear at the range and also connect my iPod and listen while I'm at shooting.

How are the Leight brand as far as profile? I have a hard time keeping muffs where they can be effective when shooting rifles. Seems like I push the stock up under them and off my ears.

I had a pair of Peltor Comtac II's that I used in Afghanistan. Cheek weld was good, I would recommend them. I also used some of the Surefire in ear earplugs too, I really like them. The Surefire plugs I ended up using the most because I could always have them on my person plus they were cheap so if they ripped, tore, or I lost them no biggie. You can easily hear range commands or someone talking with them on yet they block out high db sounds. I would give them a try before dropping $200 or more on some high end electric ear pro. If you do decide to order some get a size larger than you think you might need, according to the sizing chart they have I should have a medium, the medium fits OK but the large fits better. YMMV, good luck!
