I have been wanting a 300 wm for a while now but haven't done a lot off research. I will be shooting 600 yards plus, and already have a 308, and a 30-06. I want something big and i don't care about recoil!
I saw some 200 and 240gr .300 Win Mag loads at Double Tap generating between 3600 and 3800 ft/lbs The most I saw for the '06 was 3120 ft/lbs using a 200gr Accubond bullet - the .308 Winchester using the same bullet kicks out 2888 ft/lbs.
If you're going off the shelf, stay with a Remington action, maybe even a Savage. Thread the end of the bbl and put a JP Tank Brake or a good can on it.
Savage makes a nice rifle. I have a 300 WM that is the SIG SHR-970. If I was buying one today though I'd pry get the 300 WSM. Check ballistics and if you are reloading price of ammo won't matter.
And if you want to get crazy... maybe an A.I. in .338 Lapua

AR30.....or something using the 300RUM as the level 3 ammo is more powerful that the 300wm
I passed up on a winchester 70 and remington 700 in 300WM to get my .30-06 700. My reasoning is to stay away from belted magnums, eventually, you will have to use a broken shell extractor, there is no up or down loading to them, they are just balls to the wall every round.
