Just wondering guys, but is there ever going to be any solidarity between any significant percentage of people? I realize that we are all on this forum because we are firearm owners/enthusiasts and that gives us a common interest, but there really is more to life and politics than just firearms. The reason I post this is I see a lot of folks trying to convince others of their point of view. Some are blatantly aggressive about it and defend their position as if the person questioning it is going to personally deny them their right to think the way they do. Everybody on here shouts "Molon Labe" and "From my cold dead hands". I take that as they are willing to defend their ideals to the death. Do most of you truly know what you are shouting about? I hear a lot about how this country and its constitution were formed and for what reasons. Most of this information is contradictory. It seems our language has changed so much, the Constitution has become like the Bible and used as an end all to arguments when the user generally doesnt understand what it is he/she is defending.

Lets say, for example, we get in a total Red state, Christian mob rule Republican. Lets say he keeps all the "bad stuff" "bad" and all the ""good stuff" "good". Are the Libertarian minded among us going to be satisfied? What if the government starts aggressively enforcing new laws against certain personal freedoms? Dont you think our mess will start all over again? Will the people who believed in this president and these laws defend their nation with their lives against someone else shouting "Molon Labe"?

Likewise, say we get a truly "Laissez Faire" type government with a pure Libertarian at the helm. Are the Red state types going to be satisfied that people are legally getting high in ways they dont like or that those two "queers" over in the corner are holding hands? How long will it take before we get aggressive demands to stop a certain behavior?

The same goes for those who want socialism because of some misguided altruistic passion. Now that the gross folly that is socialism has been seen by the world, it cannot be unseen. This means that the monster will always be there. The threat will never disappear. Are we gonna use our beloved weapons against this demon even though its not figureheaded by our government? What if it directly threatens our "Laissez Faire" "Molon Labe" way of life?

I guess what I really wondering is, are all of us actually wanting freedom, or are we just wanting to impose our way of life (whatever that may be) onto someone who doesnt (cant) see it the same? Can any of us see things the same? Are the socialistic values that have defined this country since the beginning of the 20th century so ingrained in everybody that we take a certain type of control over another? These questions are not rhetorical. These questions are honest, genuine questions, though their nature does promote some thought. Im not calling anybody out specifically, I really just want honest answers.

Debate is nothing new. The folks of the late 18th century certainly didn't all agree on everything. From what I've read, their debates on various topics regarding this country's founding were just as heated as any today.

People of all persuasions seek to shape their environment to suit their preferences. It is inevitable somebody else will view the desires of others as infringing on their rights. Thus the debate, the partisanship will continue, shift and morph as new issues considered.

I can find more common ground talking to someone of an opposing view point. TALKING is the key word. I don't remember witnessing anyone change their mind on a forum when typing about a devisive political/religious issue.

For many I think Politics is the new Religion. The scriptures are the Declaration and Constitution, the saints are George Washington/Thomas Jefferson et al, the Shrines are in DC and various historical monuments across the land.

Much truth to this, however, I would argue that the continuing existence of the republic depends on people who understand and actively pursue these things. Also, I would find it difficult to make any credible argument that following the Constitution is anything less than mandatory and that the Declaration and the examples of our founders are not standards to be emulated.

John Adams said, “We were about one third Tories, one third timid, and one third true blue.”

There has never been, and will never be a consensus among ANY population. Those numbers and the amount of liberty that they wish to have shall always be in a perpetual state of flux.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and we seem to have collective memory losses as to what shade it used to be over there, or how green it actually was.

But I believe there is no more moral way to live or principal for a society to foster which will correctly grow the individual or the society to a more enlightened existance than that of liberty.

ps. My only appreciation of the constitution is what it was attempting to do. I do not follow the constitution but rather I follow the ideas that brought it into existance.

    It's the new Jenn.

I'm trying it out for a while. I'm already chafing at the restraints though. I don't foresee it lasting too long.

That's OK. We like you just as you are and always have been (or at least I think most of us do--well, I hope so anyway)! :):

The answer is no. Many political positions are diametrically opposed.
Fighting for one's position, figuratively and literally has been a part of the American way from the very beginning. It will continue to be this way (hopefully now only figuratively, through debates and at the polls). If you get tired of it and stay home on voting day you lose. Silencing others who oppose you by making them tired of all the yelling/debate is actually a known tactic in modern politics (and on this forum sometimes).

Just so we are clear, this is NOT, I repeat, NOT meant as an attempt to understand the gun control argument. This being a gun forum, I assumed anyone reading would be a gun owner. Sorry if thats what you thought, guys.

    :wwub: Awww, thanks.

The number who send me insults that violate forum rules via rep comments and threaten my life are really rather few.

    Wow are you serious?

I guess I am internet naive at how serious some take this stuff.
