This carbine was patented in 1859 by Frank Wesson, working from Worcester, Massachusetts. It is .44 Rimfire caliber, serial no. 1955, 24” octagon barrel. The first 150 were sold to the Union Army. Another 4,000-5,000 were sold to Northern militias by B. Kittredge Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The gun is stamped on the Barrel “F Wesson Patent Oct 25 1859” and “B Kittredge Co Cincinnati, O.”

It has the flip-up rear sight marked for 150 & 250 yards (yeah, right). I am not certain that the front sight is as-issued. Both sling swivels are intact. It has no system for extracting fired cartridges, which I understand indicates that it is the early model, and also led to its reputed unpopularity among the troops.

It has some issues. The lock is in disrepair. The gun cocks, but the trigger does not release the hammer. The barrel can be released and tipped. On the right side of the barrel there is a cutout which is supposed to house a sliding link which prevents overtravel of the barrel when it is tipped. This link is missing. The frame in the area of the hammer and trigger has some pitting.

    I’m located in Carmel.
