Does anyone know of any websites only line where you can buy a complete 1911 kit to assemble yourself? I read an article in shotgun news where they did this but I can't find anything online.

There are many things you need to be careful about with a 1911 build.
It's not as easy as just assembling parts, I don't intend to insult you, I just hope that you end up with a great 1911. The many little tricks to the trade are critical to a good 1911 build.
    GOOD LUCK!

Be for you start get and read the Kuhnhausen books on the 1911 they give a good look into building a 1911.then log onto the 1911 forms to get advise and help from some well known gunsmiths. It is not just a drop in type of assembly ,parts must be fitted to make a safe firearm . Not trying to stop you just some help and it can be done.

All the components can be picked up for the right price if you want to do a slow build. As they said, fusion sells all the individual main components and wilson parts can fill out the rest. Midway USA is great for affordable 1911 parts

Caspian/Foster Ind.- excellent quality and customer service (Foster is the parent company and retailer for product overruns and/or blems.)

Fusion Firearms- first class people to deal with and first class parts to build with.

Essex- been around forever and have seen their gear everywhere from Bubbas Backyard Pin Shoots to the winners circle at Camp Perry.

You won't go wrong dealing with these companies.

probably not what you're looking for and it's a bit pricey but...

Cylinder & Slide actually offers a course in assembling one (using their parts). the course is around $4500 bucks (expensive!) but you supposedly walk away with a pistol that would have cost $2400 if they were to build it for you.
