My friend recently gave me a marlin original golden-39a (22 cal). It has some rust on the barrel and is in average condition. I was wanting to know how much I could expect to sell it for.

Pictures would really help...it is hard to tell without being able to judge the overall condition of the rifle.....of course you can always check Gun Broker too.

    Yes, photos definitely help.

Also, you should be able to find websites where you can look up the serial number to determine an exact year of manufacture.

From the pictures it looks like there is a lot of rust on the barrel and receiver....very clean ones of this era are in the $400 to $475 area..so you can go down from there if that is in fact rust I see....the wood looks good but the metal parts show poor care...:twocents::twocents:

That might not be too hard to clean up if the rust is not to deep. I've cleaned a few old guns up that turned out pretty nice. Those are great rifles btw. A pleasure to shoot and work pretty well.

If that rusting hasn't progressed to the point of pitting, you can clean it off very well using 000 or 0000 bronze wool and CorrosionX. Don't try it with steel wool, as it will remove the undamaged bluing. Saturate a small wad of the bronze wool with the CorrosionX and rub all the rusted areas lightly in a circular motion. Afterwards, you can degrease the cleaned-up areas and touch up with a good cold bluing product if you like. Be sure to at least get some of the CorrosionX on the metal under the forearm wood, as who knows what might be happening under there.

Bronze wool and CorrosionX can be had from Brownell's or Midway USA.

Done well, this should get you a significantly better price for it, although IIWY I'd hold on to it. I have a couple of dozen assorted .22 RF longarms, but my old 39M would be the very last one I'd part with.

Yep, I agree, thats not a little rust, thats a lot.
Off the cuff in that condition for a spot sale I would say:
    200 wholesale
    300 retail
