I just purchased a 1937 Turkish Kaiser. The guy/dealer whom I picked it up from said he has not fired it. My question is, do I need to check the head space before firing it? If so, I would assume that there are gauges available?

Do you know for sure what your rifle is chambered for? The Turks had three Mauser based chamberings, 7.95/57 (common 8mm) or 7.65/53mm and even a 9.5 on pre 1903 rifles. It's always a safe bet to check any rifle headspace, Milsurps especially. You can order headspace gauges, maybe a local Smith will do it for a small fee?

The 1903 rifles were all chambered in 7.65/53 and later most were re-chambered to 7.95/57 (8mm). The later 1938 rifles were all chambered for 8mm

Yes it needs to be checked. I have two WW1 .303 rifles, which I checked the hs and one was ok and the other was not. I switched the bolt heads and now they are both in spec. You can buy a coin type gage to check and it is real easy to use.
