I went in to buy a Magpul M-Loc sling anchor. They wanted to scan in my driver's license. I politely said no thank you.
It was like a little bit of California had been transplanted into southern Indiana. They have achieved the "Non - Viable Commercial Entity" status in my book faster than Dick's.

Did you get your anchor, or did they stand fast?

Edit: My goto is to hand over my non resident Utah permit at places I know will try to scan the ID for alcohol sales. Its .gov issued ID, so it qualifies. Confuses them for a sec, but usually they shrug and just enter the DOB manually.

Agreed.
My attitude is "unless you have a relevant Federal form for this purchase, which requires my ID and signature, then F*** all the way off."

No sale. They have signs all over the place saying I.D. required for firearm and ammo purchases. This was none of those. Yet they still wanted my D.L. info. They can pound sand!

They seemed completely baffled because I didn't joyfully pony up any information that they were not required to collect.
I chose to give them a quick lesson in economics and personal privacy.

At least the online retailer has a legit reason for requesting the info.

Did he give any explanation why he needed it? I've used him for a few transfers... was very friendly and actually helped steer me away from a fraudulent buyer

I'm not sure modern technology has provided the capacity to determine this.
I'm sure it would involve quantum physics.
