    the obvious:

tip UP makes it much less likely to have teh knife open in your pocket. it typically places the spine into the fold of the pocket, not to the front. if it faces teh front it will open and cut you.

tip down... well...... mercop has a whole system that is effect with a tip down carried knife.

ALL my folders i carry are tip UP. i don't like getting cut, on accident or purpose. :)

I always go tip down, I have stabbed myself" tip up" because the knife came open a little!:xmad: that hurts!:(

where did you have the knife placed? to the back of the pocket, or the front?

i have had keys open a tip down knife in my pocket.

mercop's IET is best served with a TIP DOWN knife.

My Kershaw's pocket clip places it tip-down. When I pull it out, it is positioned ready to open, rather than needing to spin it around.

OK, after typing that I feel a bit dirty.

depends on the knife. on my spydercos I carry tip down, my griptilian and ZT's I carry tip up. the nice thing with most reputable knife brands is they have multiple carrying options so you can play around with it and see what you like.

I carry my Spyderco with the folded tip pointing up. Tip down when opened. So I pull it out and can open with my thumb without changing grip.

Had to think about this and I have my rajah tip up because of the quick opening system. My spyderco is tip down because I'm actually faster at opening tip down with a thumb hole or thumb stud.

I carry my CRKT M21 at the back of my pocket. It's to big for the front, but I have always carried that way.
I looked at your suggestion right after we posted, that would work well with spline in the side of my pocket. Might have to try that.

I take the clips off of my knives and carry them loose in my pocket. I only place my knife in that particular pocket, so access to it is unencumbered. I have never had a knife open in my pocket; however, I've only carried a knife for about a year, so I guess anything can happen.

It depends on the knife for me. Most of my folders can do tip up or tip down on either side of knife. Typically depends on the type of opening system the knife employs.

My folders are tip up so the Wave Like Feature automatically deploys such blade. I usually carry my fixed blade in a shoulder rig!

With the thumb hole or stud it is easier/quicker for me to carry tip down. Thumb seems to be right there when I pull it out. I carry the old version of the Spyderco Military.
