I currently have a Glock 19 for my CCW and I've been toying w the idea of moving to a 30 SF and giving my wife the 19. Thoughts or opinions on the 30 SF as a CCW? Thanks
Just got one myself! Carried it tucked yesterday and iwb untucked all day today so far. I was concerned the extra weight and girth of it compared to the 9mm platform Glocks would be an issue, but so far it's been great!
It is a little fatter than the 19, and the grip is shorter. As far as Glocks go, the 19 has the best size/fit for my hand.
i find it hard to draw the subcompact Glocks from a holster, with that shorter grip. I always have to use the extensions.
I personally think the G30 shoots smooth. Not much recoil for a small 45. Although there will be a 9mm fanboy that will come along and complain about the recoil.
You might look at the Glock 30s, it has the frame of the 30sf with a slide the same width as a G19 which might make it a little easier to CC for you. I have the G30s and have had a G30 in the past and I don't see (or feel) a lot of difference in the recoil (the 30s is a little lighter than the 30) but it does seem to be easier to CC.
I found the 30S had more felt recoil than the standard 30 or 30SF.
I think it's because the 30S has a lighter slide.
The small amount of extra girth in the 30 slide isn't going to make a big difference in CC (if any at all), but it will help at the range.
I think the G30 is the second best Glock there is after the G17, I also think that the G30 is on the bulky side for cc but with the right holster and right clothing can be manage ok.
I have the 30 and recently bought a 30S. They are both great pistols but the 30S carries a bit easier due to the slimmer slide. My 30 is more accurate though!
If you were carrying the G21 & kept a G30 as a BUG, I'd support your move completely.
Since you said that the G19 would go to your wife, I'm going to ask how she shoots it? Is she asking for the G19 or are you passing it to her?
If she hasn't shot it before, doesn't shoot it well, isn't asking you to give it to her, then I'd suggest you find a lady friendly Local Gun Shop or a chapter of the Well Armed Woman and allow her to search for her own EDC. I've been around too many ladies told what their 1st pistol should be when it completely didn't fit them in the least.
Just my thoughts... Take care & straight shooting!
I carry my glock 30 daily It replaced a hkp7 m13 I felt should retire to the safe and replace the sig p220 my wife now carrys. I like the size and the way it shoots but to be honest I will never trust it like one if my hk's but the nice thing about carrying a glock you don't have to worry about scratching it or hitting it at the end if the day it's a cheaper replacement and fired almost every time.
I carried one for awhile...nice gun, but as others have said it's pretty chunky. Some report pinky pinch as well which I noticed but it wasn't enough to get upset about.
I carried a G27 for about 10 years and switched to a G30SF about 15 months ago. It's been a long time since I've carried a G23, but I really can't recall much difference between the two in perceived weight and concealability and I do like the difference in perceived recoil with the G30 as compared to the G27 or the G23.
I carried a 30sf for right around 1 year. As far as a range/target gun, I'd have to say it was probably the most pleasant .45 pistol I've ever shot. That gun was perfectly molded to my hands and I was dead nuts accurate with it. As far as carry, I hated it lol. Like others have mentioned it is very "fat" compared to the g19. It might not seem like a lot, but that little bit of thickness makes a huge difference in carry. I can't tell you whether you'll feel the same way or not, but that was my experience with it. I would definitely recommend the gun, but maybe not for carry.
I sold off my G30 and bought a brand new G30SF last year. I do find myself carrying my G26 more than my G30SF. The G30SF is no problem carrying in a Serpa holster. IWB it tends to be uncomfortable in the holster. It will will jam the grip in your gut. It could possibly be remedied by a different IWB holster for me.
I have a G30SF and a G30S. I have found that I prefer carrying my 30S over my 30SF (like someone mentioned, the frame is slightly narrower). Still, I loved carrying my 30SF. My advice, check out the 30S before you by the 30SF.
I like it. Switch between the G19 and G30SF depending on the situation. Similar size. The most noticeable difference to me is the heavier weight of the 30. I haven't tried the new G30S, but I like the idea of it.
I had a 30SF for a while, then sold it to purchase a Glock 27. My 30SF was a sweet shooting gun, but it was too big and heavy for me to carry comfortably. If I remember correctly, the 30SF was similar sized to my father's Glock 23 (G19 frame). I was most bothered by the height (I only had the pinky extension magazines) and weight. I could shoot my 30SF better than my 27, however.
Some sizing perspective:
Length: 27 is .39 inches smaller
Height: 27 is .63 inches shorter
Width: 27 is .09 inches thinner.
Loaded Weight: 27 is 6.7 ounces lighter
Me personally, the slightly lighter weight and 5 extra rounds of the 19 would be enough to sway me towards the 9mm camp. The .45 is a more effective cartridge, but how much more over a 9mm is always debated on most gun forums... Hope it helped!
I've been looking more into this lately, and I think I'm leaning more towards the 30S instead of the 30 SF.
Feedback on the 30S? It appears to be closer in size to the 19.
