.243 rifle. I have a bigger 30-06 and .22's but I'm looking for something in between for medium to small game and a fun low recoil day at the range. Could go .223 but I think .243 may give a bit more range of uses.

    Whatcha think?

.243 is a nice caliber with plenty of commercial ammo available. If you are reloading, the .260 Remington can fill the midrange very nicely. I started playing with it when it was still a wildcat, called the 6.5 American. LOTS of different bullets are available in 6.5mm

Buy a smart 243 Win, sell the '06 and put the proceeds into a reloading press and a pile of Hornady 105 HPBTs. That system would leave what you currently have in the dust from all angles.

My step dad helped me get the 06 so it isn't going anywhere beside I'm an old school guy so the 30-06 holds a special place. It will be a safe queen really it a really nice CZ with a beautiful walnut stock. I will probably buy another large caliber for hunting because I don't want to beat it up. Since I now live in Indiana and large caliber rifles don't have much use I am looking to get something smaller. .223 isn't out I the question but. The 243 seems to have more use than 223. I think 243 would be the smallest I would want to use on a deer if I wanted to use a smaller caliber. Although 223 would be a cheaper round to shoot. I just don't know maybe have to just get then both lol

uhhhhhh specifically for deer i don't think any of those cartridges are legal. i believe they are during special hunts, like the overpopulation hunts. forget the term they use for those.

The .243 is an excellent caliber! Loads from light v-maxes at near .220 swift velocities to heavier 100ish grain bullets that will really reach out for deer sized game make it extremely versatile. I load mine with the 95 gr. Hornady SSTs. +1.5" @ 100 puts me about -6ish" at 300 yds.

    I've run a .243 of some sort since '78.
A bit much for chucks, but it works good.
If used mostly for varmints and deer off and on, then I'd suggest .243.
If going deer mostly, varmints secondary, I'd go .25-06.

I check GB off and on looking for a killer wood #1 B in ,243 :)

Yes they are illegal to hunt with in Indiana but there are other places that allow hunting with calibers such as a 243. , 270, etc.........
